Best 550 carbs?
« on: May 05, 2010, 10:34:45 PM »
I have 4 sets of carbs, and am trying to decide which ones to use... two of them have PD stamped on the side, the other two just have the keihin japan stamp.

I think that I will be using a 76 F motor for my build, but also have a 76 K motor. Any help is great.

thanks

If you can fit the PD carbs, that's the way I'd go. They stay synchronized way better than the earlier models, run a lot cleaner, and the choke has an idle up feature. The downside is you'll need to get your hands on intake manifolds and rubber connectors from a '77 or '78 550K. And unless you're running pods, you'll also need the plenum chamber, or at least the rubber connectors, from a '77 or '78 550K. I recently did this conversion, so PM if you need assistance with it.

I will take a closer look at the carbs this weekend, and see which ones are in better condition. I'm definitely going to tear them down and give a good cleaning.

I have intake manifolds and rubbers from my other 77 550, so I think I'm good to go?

I was thinking of using a hybrid of the stock air box and a larger pod filter. Something along the lines of what forum member Traveler built for his cafe. I was doing some reading, and it sounds like the bike will run better with the stock air box and the one filter, rather than 4 pod filters. (correct me if I'm wrong)

 Thanks for the help!!

The PD carbs have press-in pilot jets. Gently wiggle and turn to remove them. Tap back in using a wooden dowel.

If they're from a K model, then yes. They shouldn't have synchronizing ports on them.

I wouldn't say you're wrong. It's your bike. But I believe the guys who designed the induction system knew what they were doing.
