What's up with my center stand?
« on: May 06, 2010, 02:28:58 PM »
Can I get some pics/measurements of the CB500 centerstand?

I recently got one for my '71 CB500 and it's too short and too narrow. It won't pick the rear wheel up off the ground when the bike is up on it. When the bike is down, the legs hit the chain and brake rod.

What is the width between the feet (on the onside)? If the bike was up on the stand, what would be the measurement from the pin/shaft to the foot (or ground)? I think I have one from the wrong model....

I got measurements from a forum member and it seems I have the correct stand.
I do not have the stock exhaust. Do I need to fabricate a stop to keep it from coming up and hitting the chain/rod?

But that doesn't address the issue of not lifting the bike completely. Is the rear wheel supposed to clear the ground when the bike's on the center stand?

The rear tire could have been replaced with one that is not recommended for the bike-the tire may be too tall resulting in not allowing the stand to raise the rear.

The tire is a 110-90-18, the modern equivalent of the 3.50-18.

So you got that part figured out.  Does the bike rest on the rear tire with the front off the ground?
It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

No, both wheels are on the ground when it's on the center stand. I have to put a block of wood under the stand to get the rear wheel off the ground.

So it's on a 4-point stance when on center stand?  If you park on hot asphalt, that could be a GOOD thing!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Are you able to run the center stand with a Mac 4-1? I tried mounting the L shaped bracket that came with it on the left passenger peg but that doesn't touch the center stand. It looks like it's supposed to mount on the right passenger peg along with the muffler hanger, but it touches the muffler.

I can live with putting a block of wood under the stand to get the bike off the ground. The only time I REALLY need the rear wheel free is for chain adjustments.

Sometimes the mounting points or cross member get stressed from people sitting on them while on the stand. Causes this issue. It can be addressed with small shims in the right place.

This is a stretch but waaaay back in the 70's I put a 16" harley rim on my 750 necessitating shortening the center stand. Might you have a shortened stand?
