I thought I should introduce myself
« on: January 30, 2006, 01:15:24 PM »
Just thought I'd introduce myself because I'm just starting on my CB750K7 project and I'll probably be asking for a lot of help. My name is Tom and I live in Houston, Tx. I was given (i.e. for free)  the bike and now I finally have a little bit of time to work on it. My thought is to get it running good and looking as good as possible for the short term and later on when I have more $$ I'll do a bit nicer job on it. Here's what I know so far... it runs (poorly) and there is a lag from when I twist the throttle to when the engine starts accelerating (wrong jet size?). It also backfires a little (carbs out of sync?). It has a set of 4 into 2 pipes like I've never seen before, I'll get some pics later. It came with a Windjammer fairing and a few extra parts. I don't know anything about the history of the bike, except the guy who gave it to me got it from some guy in Michigan. I am in the process of breaking it down a little to clean and put back together. Oh yeah, one more thing, there's a lot of smoke coming out of the right pipe (cylinders 3 and 4) which I am assuming is worn or stuck rings. If anyone has any thoughts on what is causing my bikes ailments please let me know. I hope to be putting yet another neglected SOHC back on the road soon.

Welcome, Tom! ;D

It's always nice to hear of another sohc4 being saved from a rusty grave.

As far as the engine problems go, do a thorough search of the FAQ's and past technical forum posts first, as these topics have been brought up before and there is tons of good info on them.  Not trying to blow you off at all, though, but you will get much more useful info from the folks here if you can narrow down the possibiliteis by trying the remedies to the most common problems and then coming back with specific info on the ones that are still occuring.

Good luck, and definitely stick around.  You'll learn a lot!! :)

Your bike has an accelerator pump diaphragm.  It gives a shot of gas into all the carb throats when you twist the grip to prevent lag...when its working.
Back fire in exhaust or intake?
A compression test could also be helpful to verify mechanical integrity of each cylinder.
Probably best to do a complete and thorough tuneup to establish some normalcy.  Recommended order:
Cam chain tension,
valve tappets,
sparkplugs cleaned, gapped, correct number and type. (Or new)
ignition points cleaned or replaced, gapped, and timing adjusted.  Static is good, but dynamic also allows advance mechanism verification.
Air filter cleaned/renewed.
Oil & filter changed  (Recommend motorcycle specific oil)
Carbs synced

Then check the head pipes for even heat across the bank (flash touch) and revisit and observe which objectionable symptoms persit.

If the compression test was good, the smoking cylinder(s) just might normalize after all the cylinders have equal adjustments to fire evenly and the rings loosen and reseat.

Enjoy the hobby!
