Cool thread.  Lots of ballsy commitment in the fab work.  Its hard to put tons of work into something not knowing if it will fit/work or if youll have to scrap something all together and take it in another direction.

new points cover again. Havent touched the bike in a while. I have a couple roadblocks.

#1 the chain hits the frame (180 rear tire) about 1/4" more clearance needed
#2 rear sets cant find a home until I nail down the seat
lots of little stuff

(remind me to post a picture of my mini lathe)

#1 use a jackshaft
#2 use bolts instead of nails, I really shouldnt have to tell you this.

Jackshaft instead of cutting the frame and putting in some arches? LOL

If you don't use a jack shaft won't the chain be out of alignment?

Machine the sprocket carrier down and get the chain as close to the rear tyre as you can. You could also mount a small piece of Teflon on the frame so if the chain does manage to rub at all it won't do any damage. Use an offset front sprocket to align the chain, cycle x sells some or you could weld 2 sprockets and machine your own....Its all doable.... ;)

Spacer for the front sprocket so the chain will clear the 180 rear....but now hits the frame.

This is the spacer that I have already made. Essentially I have a double sprocket on the engine. For the sprockets to lign up the front one had to move out from the stock position about 3/4". The sprocket on the rear wheel cant go any closer to the inside.
I like the jackshaft idea but...when I look at the bike I dont see a decent place for it. Look at a side profile of my bike an imagine the angle that the chain would have to go up in order for me to put a jackshaft on top of the swingarm.

What if I put the jackshaft INTO the swingarm!? I could have the sprockets ride on bearings on the actual rear swingarm axle!

Here is a good profile pic. (you can see my bumped out sprocket resting on top of the swingarm)
Jackshaft on top of or inside the swingarm?

I vote for clearancing the frame - with a jackshaft you've got more complexity and you wreck the anti-squat geometry.

FWIW, I'm not a shill for Race Tech - I've just got a thing for good suspension and the RTCE's are the most cost-effective mod for these old damping rod front ends.

anti squat? I dont follow. You think there will be a problem having the jackshaft located on the pivot point of my rear end?

As many of you know, I am not an engineer, I just dive in with both feet then figure things out amid the mess....so if you see a problem....hold me back from the dive. ???

Thanks for the kick in the butt. I havent touched the bike in almost a year now. I have been plugging, switching, swapping and shopping for the "frankenbike" for so long..ug. There are things that I did 4 years ago that I would never do today to the thing. Pretty dicouraging when you are your worst enemy. There is another Cb550F in the works right now and I just finished my S90. Frankenbike will have to rot for a few more months.

HAHA! I know that feeling. There have several times where I built something and was completely satisfied with it,only to redo it years later.Even after it worked flawlessly all that time.  Thats just life! Still love to see you wrap this one up.

Don't quit on it!

Love your covers by the way, any chance you'd like to trade for some?
I see your Honda fan. I have a QA50 that I'd love to part with.

Its not about quitting, its about...other projects. I have too many other projects that are making me money or that are already running. The Frankenbike was started in 2005. I take a year or so off then get back to it.....that is the problem. I dont have a shop, or a garage.
Only space in the basement for 1 bike at a time. No welding or fumes allowed.

Yeah! He has got a great project going on there. Maybe someday I will as well. I have been saving my money with the daydream of building a one car setup but....today we found out that my 4 year old lab has a torn ACL and it is a GULP $2500 surgical fix.
