What do you guys think of this bike.  I see them pop up for sale and I find myself strangely attracted to them. I try to picture one with the fairing and square headlight removed and replaced with a round one...

I really just don't know much about them though...

Square light seems out of place eh!
One of the later model Hondas that hark back to the good ones.
I've always had a soft spot for the CB400 for this reason.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I never minded the little fairing because it seems to work with the shape of the tank (vaguely 400F-esque?).  All in all- a very handsome bike and one of Honda's unsung heroes.  A great bike, IMHO.

I think it's really the square headlight that bothers me.  The fairing is actually pretty nice.  I'm trying to think of any application where I like a square headlight, but can't come up with one. I've owned a number of Jeep CJ's, and never could get around the square lights they put on Wranglers in 87!

Anyway, it's nice to hear good things about this bike. I see them for sale and just kinda want to take a closer look... but I've only got room for so many bikes...

Check out my bike on the cb550sc mods post yesterday. Its an 83 550 but its got similiar lines as the 84 700 to give you an idea of what it could look like. I did redo the entire rear but its also got the round light. I think the square light on the 84 would look cool if it was lowered to sit in front of the tank were it should be instead of sky high. Its got that racer fairing around the light and it would look pretty badass in my opnion. Good Luck.

Everyone that I've ever spoken to that had one misses it, "great bike, does everything, reliable, powerful, handls well, etc, etc"  Seems to me it'd make a great sport tourer.  I've even seen one with a Vetter fairing on it somewhere on the web.

If it's in good shape and the price seems fair go for it, it'll sell if you don't like it.

if 2nd gear is there grab it.I can honestly say it was my favorite bike.I am always on the lookout for another one, even with shaft drive po's like to wheelie these bikes.I got mine as a beater and rode it for 5 years until 3rd gear started going as well.Great sport tourer,so smooth that on a 1200 mile trip I literally fell asleep while riding the bike in the Pa mountains, thank god for rumble strips.Fully loaded with saddle bags, tank bag,and my girl on back I passsed a bunch of slow a$$ harley baggers and a line of about 10 cars doing about 120mph with more rpms to go,It would have went even faster if I wanted it to.The only competition it had back then was a 900 ninja and a VF1100.If I am not mistaken road tests shown it was capable of 140+.God I miss that bike.
its better to regret something you have done, than something you havent.Except playing with explosives.

great little bikes. perfect daily rider i would think.  if you don't like the square, you could re-shape the fairing front and mount double rounds.

Ahh, congress just enacted that tariff because Harley-Davidson petitioned 'em for relief.  LARGE tax on any imported motorcycle over 700cc.  So, lots of de-stroked motors right to 699cc.  :)

I have an '85 Suzuki GS700E in my garage right now.  That was Suzuki's version of the 699cc end-around.

To Harley's credit, they DID agree to have it lifted a few years later when they got going a little bit better.  Took a bit for the Evolution engine of '84 to get the word out.

Sorry to bring back such a old post. But I almost made my mind on the same bike. Is it comfortable for both you and the girl for about 2-3h ride?
