I need a CB500 drive chain...
« on: May 09, 2010, 02:02:29 PM »
I need a new drive chain for my 72 CB500 for a long trip I'm going on this month. I know I can't use an O-ring chain but thats all i seem to be finding on the internet. can someone point me to a site that would have a standard chain for under $50?

according to sprocket specialists,  the CB500 is a 98 vice 100 for the 550.

I don't think it needs to be model specific.

When I needed to replace the chain on my '73 CB500, I just went a local motorcycle dealer (not even Honda) and had them order a 98 link 530 non-O ring chain.

I think it was $20.

Why can't you use an O-ring chain?

Because it rubs aginst the case. And if left to do so long enough will wear a hole through it. Any decent 530 chain will fit, and if you use a clip link make sure the clip faces the correct way and is on the outside. The length you need depends on your gearing. 17/34 stock 500 gearing needs 98 links. 17/37 gearing needs 100 links.

This is something I did not know. This information:
 A) is Awesome because I found out before running the O-ring chain I just put on my 500.

And, B) Sucks because I just installed a brand new O-ring chain!

The good news is that I never started the bike with it on there and the company I got it from is going to work with me on an exchange.

Also, I'm having some clutch adjustment issues. The O ring chain I have is nearly a 1/4" wider than the non O-ring chain I have in the garage (from my Yamaha, but still...). Now I'm anxious to remove the side cover and see if the chain is interfering with the clutch actuator arm in some way.

so a chain that works on a CB750 will work on most honda CB fours as long as links were removed to make it the right length, correct? would something like this do: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-530-Motorcycle-Chain-Honda-CL450-CB500-FT500-VT500-/350338511559?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5191cd72c7
