I have a cb 550 with pods, and a 4-1 pipe. They carbs were re-built to stock, and I need to run the bike half choke.

I think I needed bigger mains (right?), but where does a guy find them?

Do a search on carb tuning. There's lots here.

But, to answer your question, maybe and maybe not.  The mains barely effect low-throttle cruise. That's in the needle, needle jet, and slide cutaway range. Lower the needle clip one position (thereby raising the needle and enriching the 1/3-1/2 throttle mixture) and see how it goes first.

Just jetting my 76 CB550F cafe project also. I've been adding to the PODS thread in FAQ. Basically I'm almost back to stock settings with a slightly richer main (#100) and needles raised 1 notch (#3) richer. My plugs are sooty and absolute black but it actually runs quite well. I will return the needle to stock position and see how it runs then. All other facets that affect the carburation have been checked so the engine is fully tuned/set up to avoid issues that could affect carb jetting.
