Just got my Sandcast handlebars in RECORD TIME
« on: May 11, 2010, 10:56:28 AM »
Wow, fast delivery from David Silver Spares!  I ordered these from ENGLAND
land of Formula One constructors and the mighty Isle of Man race....ONLY SIX DAYS AGO
sheesh talk about great service, come all the way from the UK to Silicon Valley side
in just six friggin days wow.

Question for you dudes about these bars (see the pictures):

- the rise is not as high as I would have expected -- I measured the vertical riser part of the bar and it measures about 5".    This is my very first cb750 ever, does the 5" rise sound right?  Right now my sandcast has ape hangers, no comparison

- are the holes on the bottom of the bar at the instrument clusters on both grip ends and the center bottom hole correct?   Obviously that's for cable routing.  On the right grip side there is some 'chrome bluing' but it'll be hidden by the grip you can see it in the pic now:

(p.s. fringe benefit of being divorced BIKE PARTS ALL OVER THE HOUSE and the dogs dont complain bout that now!    :D)

David Silver's is awesome about shipping.  Being in England I'd be happy if it got here in two weeks.  Last batch I ordered from them got to Texas in about that time.  Yeah dogs are awesome when it comes to bikes, whenever I'm taking a pic of the bike mine tries to jump in the frame.  I think she'd about die if I got her a ride in a sidecar.

As I understand it K0/K1 bars were 3.9` rise....did you buy these ones?

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/part_7669/

Also check Yamiya for further reference on rise...

http://www.yamiya750e.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28_30&products_id=258

H = 10 cm = 3.93`

K4 bars on the the other hand are 5.5` rise....

http://www.yamiya750e.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28_30&products_id=260

How much was shipping from DSS? I was going to buy the K0/K1 bars but they are now sold out  :-\

My 5" of measure was with my tape measure starting at the bottom part (triple-tree clamp part)
of the handle bar, then the tape laying flat along the up-angled part of the bar that leads to the handle part. That is 5".

Based on your message, I measured *vertically*  from the bottom (triple tree part) of the bar to
a horizontal imaginary line across the uppermost handle part of the bar.  That measurement was
a little less than 4" so I think I got what I ordered.

Wow, sorry to hear they're out of stock, I think my timing was good, and Andy heck man I gotta than YOU for that! I got the idea from you at
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=70064.msg777204#msg777204

There were a few in quantity when I ordered it -- I bet since the bars are used
on the 1969, 1970, 1971 (at least according to my Honda "all models parts cross reference") --
I bet DSS will order more -- have you sent them an email?
I did notice that on the DSS ordering page for the K0 bars it does say 'temporarily' out of stock.

The shipping notice on the box says 53100300000 and yep, I ordered it from:
http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/parts/part_7669/  page on the DSS website.

According to the shipping label, DSS shipped it to me via "UPS EXPSAVER   REST OF WORLD"
so it came UPS, for 33gbp.   The bars cost 35gbp, so it was 68gbp in total,
which at today's exchange rate pounds-to-USD is $100.44
(got that from http://www.x-rates.com/calculator.html).

Like the other folks on the board have said,  parts for this one are not cheap.
But she's going back to stock.

I will do a 'vagabond restoration' on it first.   What I mean by that is I will acquire and install
all stock parts, get the bike 100% roadworthy, get it titled and registered in my name, then drive it around for a short while to discover any issues with it and fix those.

That ends my 'vagabond restoration' step.

Then we go to frame-up resto.

I have the stock pipes minus one baffle and two rubber connectors that cushion and connect the top and bottom mufflers.

Lots to do with this!  Thanks again Andy.

Thanks J, I will call my dealer first thing in the morning based on that and try to find a pair of the cushions and clamps locally before I order online.  Worth a try but I doubt I'll find them in town.  I found a pair on ebay for ....$50 and got to wondering if I could fabricate a set.  (I can hear the purists "To Swords!")

I didn't even think that Honda might still stock them...Thanks J!

On the right handlebar switch , is the kill switch black, or red?

The prior owner had that throttle/control bit apart and removed from the handlebar for some sort of issue, it is a black button for the start button.
What does it mean?

The selector knob to kill engine should be black.

Lower switch housing should have only 1 throttle cable hole..

...I ordered from DSS a few months ago and it took 6 weeks

I was fuddled when DSS spares sent me a 'We need your approval' email that asked me to approve a shipping charge of 33gbp that was almost as much as the bars at 35gbp.   I did not want to pay that much.

So, I then sent DSS an email and said "I am not in a rush, please quote me for the cheapest shipping, I don't want to pay the 33gbp"  and they came back with 'the only other alternative is nearly as expensive and due to the bulkiness of the package it will not be accepted or it will be rejected' and I said, 'Ok, I'll go ahead and accept the expensive way so it will get through."

So I'm wondering based on what you ran into with the slow shipment, maybe DSS got a lot of complaints about that and that certainly affects their reputation doesn't it.

So perhaps they corralled and said "The only way to solve these 'why is it taking so long' complaints is to Express mail it to our customers."

Because despite the shipping being expensive it must have been a rush through UPS Express to only take less than 1 week.

Maybe you're not the only customer who got the package way late and DSS decided to fix that...how much was your shipping, if it was notably below 33gbp, you're not far away from me there in Dallas, I'm in Silicon Valley, I bet they didn't express mail it.

Just my guess there.

The selector knob to kill engine should be black.

Lower switch housing should have only 1 throttle cable hole..

I have already discovered somewhere in time, maybe for the antique, I mean
OLD-looking, Hooker header one of the prior owners moved away from the cable carbs
and installed push-pull/pulley carbs, or maybe the tops only were changed, because there
are 2 cables.

I mentioned the carbs were not 4 cables in a post several days ago.  I was 100% bummed about it.
I got a good deal on the bike but it has already cost me $100 just for the stock bars.

I am fixing to change them carbs to stock it is on the to-do list.  I also need the stock airbox and want to buy an aftermarket onebecause the beast is gonna get painted anyway....probably will cost the same as  used one that will just be re-painted.

So now 754 I just discovered I need the right handlebar single-cable throttle, and will say -- thanks
because that one was NOT on my to do list!

Should the start button be red or black as I look around for a used right handlebar control with the single throttle cable?

To give DSS the benefit of doubt, perhaps the parts were back-ordered? It does sound like most folks have had good service from them.

I've always found D.S. brilliant to deal with, one of their guys named Keith swapped emails with me for a week to sort my clutch cable out.
One cable arrived 4 days after ordering and even with that blasted volcano erupting the second only took 6 days (2 days stuck at Heathrow airport).
Rear shocks took 5 days, not bad for the distance they have to come. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

So he would need the correct right hand switch too....as he now has the two cable style....not the single cable style....with black knob.

If you go for a cheaper option it probably went by land/sea and that can take weeks, I know from experience, then when it arrives in the US remember US shippers do the rest and we know what USPS are like, again from experience  :D
