I'm Selling My 1971 CB750 Whats it Worth?
« on: May 12, 2010, 11:51:20 AM »
??? Well I have reluctantly decided to sell my 1971 CB750. I am not sure what to ask for it. Should I sell it on ebay or Craigslist? Its a nice bike and I'm the 2nd owner. This is what I have done to the bike.
NEW PAINT. A friend (who does it for a living) and I did it using the kit from Vintage Honda Paint.
NOS Seat. Purchased on ebay
NOS handlebars
Rebuild Caliper. Honda seal
NGK spark plugs and honda point plate.
New front and rear sprockets (18 and 48) with new O ring chain.
The bike came with HM300 pipes that are in pretty nice shape and is otherwise stock. The tires are IRC and new when I bought it 3 years ago. Not my first choice in tires but I was cruising at 70 on the highway and they rode pretty good. It has a couple of dings in the front fender and the tach is a little discolored but its fully functional. Its not perfect but better then most that are on craigslist. Here are some pictures and a video taken today.
I want to get a 1970 CB750 to do. Since I was laid off in December and can't get my pension for 6 more months I can't afford both. I got this one and did it like the one I had back in the 70's. I always wanted a 1970 with the gills on the side covers. I'm not getting any younger, so what the hell!!!  Thanks in advance for your input!

Look at the Old Goldie thread....there is no consensus on what your bike is worth. Put it on Ebay and let the market decide. Asking here is like asking how long is a piece of string  ;)

First, read through all seven pages of this thread:

and then decide if you still want to ask that question. ;)

Don't be so sure, your bike is stunning.

I would scrub the rust staining out of the screw heads, then give her an ultismo detail, then Ebay.

You will get your '70.

Here a couple of 1971 CB750 that are on Ebay. Both look to be in about the same condition as yours.
One has a few less miles and one has a few more.
Both have over 5 days left on there auction and both are above $3000 already.
Follow these sales and it will give you a good idea what yours will bring.

Get new K0 side covers, a grab handle and call it a 70, it I won't tell.  It's awesome.

Thanks scrap, I just trying to figure out what reserve or what asking price. I almost put it on for $3500 but after looking in to it a little more I figured that was a little low.

I would keep the one you have and change the sidecovers as was suggested. You will spend a lot getting a 70 in the same shape as you have. Dan

BEAUTIFUL BIKE!!!!!!!

If it was mine I don't think I could sell it, but I understand you wanting a 70KO. In my opinion you bike is worth every bit of $3500. If you can't get at lease that for it I would hold on to it.

good luck dhall

From ebay are three different cb750s of 1971 vintage in the 'Completed Listings,' ie.
I looked it up for you and found three 1971 cb750s whose auctions recently ended last
couple days..

1) 25,000 miles, sold for $2233.00.
BUT IT IS A HIGHLY HIGHLY MODDED OUT BIKE.
     Auction ended today, 5/12/10.
Price was low imo due to heavy duty, 'far-from-stock-bike' modded out situation there

2) 5090 (low!) miles, highest bid was $3750, 10 total bids on it.
STOCK BIKE.    Despite 10 bids it didnt sell.
MY OPINION OF WHY IT DIDNT SELL:   (a) super low mileage
     (b) stock bike   (c) super-nice condition   (d) so the seller put a 'Buy it now' of $8900
     (e) and the Reserve wasn't met
     Auction ended 5/10/10.

3) 20,368 miles, highest bid was $4050, RESERVE NOT MET, didn't sell.
     Auction ended 5/8/10.

Your machine their be lookin REAL nice now, me? I'm holding that sucker until U.S.
unemployment drap down to 6% or less and man-oh-man, that one is in such nice shape,
you will NOT run into 'Reserve not met' on your auction!

When the economy come back around folks'll lay the money down!

As to how to finance the K0 purchase -- you can alway do what my friend does, he
finds the bike put a down payment on it and makes payments for a few months.
Will every seller do that?  Nope.  Some will!

Its like trying to buy ANYTHING but get good terms.  You walk up to the seller and say
"I will pay you your asking price plus 10%, no haggling!"   Then he'll say "I'll take it!"
Then you say "Will you let me give you 1/2 now, and payments for 6 months, you keep the
bike at your place"

My friend been doin that fer 10 year.
Most recent buy was a $15,000 Yamaha Rz500.

Wow Thanks Chort I want to redo the 1970 myself (not a sandcast) I would be happy with a "beater" or something like this.  http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/mcy/1715307959.html
I buy one ride it for a year or two, sell it. Get another project. I still have my 1975 CB750K, I've had for 30 years. I'm going to put that one in the will. Thanks for the info it really helps.

Highly narcissistic thread... your bike's value is not determinable here, no value until you sell it... please don't ask us, we have bikes and we know about 'em and want them CHEAP...!

Def ebay seems the way to go. Start it at $999 and set the reserve at $4K and you should sell.

Good Luck.

Keep in mind that my info is just an opinion! But you can always go down on the selling price, can't really go up, so start high.
The key to selling online is a well written ad and good photos. You have good photos, put them all in the listing.
Also, let potential buyers know that shipping a motorcycle is easy [no crating!] and relatively inexpensive. You, being in the midwest[?], can ship a bike anywhere in the US for approx $600 or less [haulbikes.com - I've used them].

Good luck! And we want to see pics of the '70!!

My opinion, which is highly regarded by me, is to keep it. It's very nice and like you said better than most. Unless you are broke and I doubt you are, hang on to it. You'll thank me later. Besides there's absolutely nothing wrong with having more than one CB750. Ask anyone except a family member. 71's are as cool as 70s in my opinion and comparably restored bikes will bring prices very close - within a couple grand. What's a couple grand - come- on, keep it.

Thanks K6, Believe me I would like to, but if I kept every bike and car I would need an airplane hanger (that would be cool). I would like to rescue a beater 1970 ride that for a couple years. I only put 150 miles on the 1971 last year so I hope someone buys it and rides the $#!? out of it.
Oh by the way your K1 restore post is kick A$$!!

Well, someone will definitely get a nice K1. Anyway restoring a K0 beater will cost thousands and thousands of dollars. But you already know that, don't you.  Added more to the K1 restore today. Getting close to turning the key. Maybe next week sometime.

Yes K6, Thousands of dollars but its worth it when its done. I've already started collecting parts. I have a seat (needs to be recovered) tank and 1 side cover not much but its a start. I look forward to the "Turning of the Key" on your K1.
