Air filter(s)
« on: February 03, 2006, 04:57:48 PM »

greetings all.
thanks for helping me out on my last post.

i just have a question about air filters.
i have a 1978 cb550k.
i wanted to put on pods.
no too sure what size i need though.
but, it seems like a complicated task to turn the carbs afterwards.
are pods that bad?

plus i saw another air filter on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/75-Honda-CB550-CB-550-Air-Box-with-K-N-Filter_W0QQitemZ4609327457
it's like a 4 into 1 type air filter.
are these a good idea?

thanks.
matt.

that looks awesome!  i dont see any reason why you couldn't get that to work... buy it... slap it on and, if you need help tuning the carbs afterward... you know where to go.

If the price stays low, it would be worth a shot, but that's just a K&N custom adapted to the stock air box.  If the price starts going up, though,  you might want to consider keeping the stock air intake system and just switching the paper filter with a UNI foam replacement one.

The carbs on your 78 are different, and the airbox and intake rubbers slightly changed as well. But no problem, just attach that new filter to your airbox, it will fit the same. It will flow more air than the stock pleated filter (but less than 4 pods) so it is likely you'll need to adjust for that somewhat. I've set up a similar filter arrangement, but will not have the bike running for a while yet so can not give you any advice on carb setting. Check back on previous discussions and you'll find some help.

I kept the stock air box and tossed in a Uni foam replacement.  It works great, bike runs better and no rejetting.
