75 CB550 rewire
« on: May 10, 2010, 01:11:28 PM »
Hey guys,
I've been tinkering on my 75 CB and I'm toying with the idea of pulling all the wiring off and doing a complete rewire. Whoever did the rewire on it before me left a lot of loose ends and exposed wires so I want to clean the mess. How hard of a job would this be? I would not be replacing electrical parts, just the wires connecting it all. What are your opinions?

P.S. If I do this I will also need to find a nice high res wiring diagram to run all the correct colors and such. Anyone know where I could get this?

It shouldn,t be too hard take a bunch of pics so that you have a reference as to how and where they were routed....

I have done it a couple times and the pics really help my memory...

do a search on manuals , there are several downloads

If you buy something.........pay for it !
If you sell something .......ship it !
If you say you are going to do something......do it !
If you have a question about something......ask it !
When the seller answers ........let him know whether you still want it or not !
If you receive something .....let the seller know you got it !
If you get something and are happy/un happy with it .....let the giver/seller know !
If you have any kind of issue,shipping/receiving/quality/price/shipping charges etc !

i used a book of electricians "numbering stickers"
i repaired my entire harness and connections (lights-switches-ignition etc) off the bike and on a table. traced and labeled for example, stuck the #1 on female and another #1 sticker on ther male, so when i put everything on the bike  all ihad to do was find the right number. i then wrote the corresponding number in the wiring diagram in my clymer so i could always reference back. these IDEAL stickers are tough and put up with alot of abuse.
there are alot of ground connections forexample, and these books come with multiple sequential numbers for that need.

they have them at home depot.

Great idea, thanks for the Home Depot lead.  I am about to due the custom harness for my 550 build, using a kit from Centech.  The wires are labeled every 6", but are all black; seems the chopper guys like it this way!

Not quite high res! But I found this wiring diagram somewhere on the forum:

Trying to track down a short on my 75 550K right now, and it seems to be accurate.

The diagram is a good idea, he said some one tinkered with the current harness. So I would not try and label that one instead replace what you can using the diagram and then label them if need be..I just would not trust the current connections a whole bunch.

If you need to use process of elimination to make things easier, there's an online interactive wiring chart I found that lets you remove the wires you don't want to see... I think the site was www.oldmanhonda.com

Thanks for the info guys. I am going to start this project maybe next month and the more info I have, the better. Like Zaipai said, the bike has been tinkered with so stock diagrams will help a lot. It was originally a salvage bike that was brought back to running condition and then sold to me.  It is fine to ride now (see my avatar) but there are loose ends and random empty connectors everywhere. Plus, I think I have double the amount of wires that should be in the headlight bucket. When I get around to it I will take as many pictures as possible and maybe put a few up here to show progress. Thanks again.
