wireless kill switch?
« on: May 14, 2010, 09:05:52 AM »
after reading some of the my bike just got jacked or almost... thread and my buddy got his bike stolen ( for being overly trusting) my k8 has a hidden power switch and is keyless... how tough would it be to make a wirelessly activated kill switch obviously you would have to have some type of wireless relay switch or something? could these parts be bought cheap? i was just thinking it would be cool to have a remote key that you hit a button and your lights come on...

I saw some very inexpensive parts some time in the last year or so that would accomplish what you're looking for.  It was a box that could control relays.  The box was controlled by a fob.  The system's original intent was a car alarm if I remember correctly.  The problem you get into is that operating a relay costs electricity.... so does the receiver (box).  The relay could be in it's "Normally Open" state when the bike was "un-startable" (not using power) but if you wanted to leave the bike in a startable state for any period of time, you're at risk of draining your battery down (with the relay).  ...still worth pursuing I think.  If I find the parts, I'll post them.

Yeah something like that could be wired up as a wireless kill switch.

Any auto parts store should have cheap, universal "keyless entry" systems for cars.  I think the brand I bought and installed in my Subaru is "Bulldog", and it cost 30 bucks.  The receiver and relays could easily be adapted for use on a motorcycle as an ignition circuit cut-off.  In fact some of them come with a relay specifically for that purpose, where the ignition circuit is only capable of being turned on when the system is disarmed.

Not wireless, but I used this in my old MGB car which had a broken ignition switch that would turn and start the car without a key (wonderful Lucas parts.)  I put this behind the passenger seat on the back battery shelf, easy to install and where I could reach it (it was near the battery). Could be used easily on a motorcycle.

Most of the stolen bikes I personally know of were not started and ridden off they were carried/pushed onto a trailer or truck bed and hauled off. Only one I ever heard of that was ridden off was a dirt bike that was stolen by kids to joy ride.

The steering lock does not really stop them either. I am not all that unusually strong and I have picked up the front end of a big BMW GS while the owner pushed the bike from behind. We had the bike on a trailer in under two minutes from his parking lot at work where the ignition tumbler had completely locked up and failed. Sad thing was only one or two people even gave us a second glance as we wrestled it up on the trailer. A kill switch is useless if the bike is in someones shed being torn apart for parts.

Agreed.  My father loves telling a story about a guy he went to college with who had to lock his car to a tree since people would pick it up and put it on his front porch regularly.  It was a small car, but it was still a car!  There isn't much you can do if someone wants your bike.  Best off to carry full coverage and get it appraised.  Life just isn't fair.  It's just life.

i thought if this this has some kind of tripable alarm maybe making some kind of trigger that would cause the bike to go crazy if it was stood up off the side stand

Why don't you buy a tracking device? Is as big as a pack of sigarettes and only costs about 150USD. My brother has it and we tested it. We drove about 50 miles away and he could still find it back :)
