400f airbox install help?
« on: May 14, 2010, 07:29:10 PM »
After a few millenia I'm putting the 400 back together. Got the brake unstuck and lubed, carbs ungunked and installed, but the airbox has me halted. How does one get the whole setup installed? The carbs slide into the intake boots just fine, but I can't slide the airbox between the filter housing and the carbs. Is there a better order in which to do things? I know if I go back out there I'll be covered in blood and petroleum products and there'll be a dead 400 on it's side.

thanks,
jim

ps - I've read the few threads on this but none described a preferred order of assembly, which is what I'm striving for as a starting point

You should be able to slide the airbox in from the right side of the bike.  For a little extra room, you may be able to loosen the battery mount.  It's a pain in the ass, but you can do it.  Once it's in, get the carb clamps on first and tighten down.  Then, you may need to pull the filter side back a bit to get the oval shaped connector on.

Good luck.

Well, having nothing else to do while I waited for any late-night replies, I decided to try the ratchet-strap-around-airbox trick and...it worked. No idea which god I pleased, but I owe one of them something.

what exactly is this? I struggled putting mine on originally and will need to remove the carbs for more work soon so I am going to revisit the fitting problem again.

It was on another thread, http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=53391.0

You want to compress the airbox against the frame. My strap gripped the frame so hard it would only compress the side of the strap with the ratchet; you'll do better if you can rig it up so it compresses the airbox evenly.

Now I'm having issues getting the brake pad to retract; it's getting lodged in the caliper.
