Australia: best fuel?
« on: August 18, 2011, 07:56:36 PM »
Any Aussie Four riders have an opinion on the best brand or grade of local petrol to run?
I'm getting different opinions from know-alls riding modern bikes, not oldies.
Mine's a CB750K2 and most of the local juice here in Brisbane is Shell, Caltex or Matilda.

Cheers.

In WA most of it comes from the same place (BP refinery in Kwiniana), regardless of which retailer sells it.

I use regular unleaded fuel.  Cheapest and best.

just keep away from the brand x sellers and low volume sellers,i have two caltex close by me and always use just the 95,i used to use 98 all the time and after doing a little experiment i find the 95 is the same in my 550 and also my warmed over 308 i have had for umteen years.i dont really care for economy or emissions though, were lucky to not have that stupid eth rubbish everywhere in higher concentrations like in the states.

Mine runs better on 98 - Shell or BP, they are much the same, and as Kwality said, mostly come from the same refineries. Yet I hear many say that Caltex is crap.... ???
I have found 95 to be a bit hit and miss, and often the bike even ran better on 92 than 95, but I stick to 98 these days. Use that in my mini too, it loves it.
One station in a town near home had 100 on tap until recently - the old girl enjoyed that while it lasted!
Steer clear of the E10 stuff, very bad for carbies I believe.

Thanks guys. Seems like the higher octane is the go. It all smells the same to me too, but some swear it comes from different sources. I'll keep expirimenting I guess. Hey Pete: Nice old racing shot. Looks like Amaroo.

i can cane my 308 on caltex 98 or 95 over a two week period on both and i run a pretty high initial 18 degree advance and use the vac advance and it wont ping on either, power actually feels better on 95?not a lab or dyno test test sure but ive had this car a long time,i dont care for cost either,,ive driven this v8 everyday for 27 years,i rebuilt the engine in 92,,put new heads about three years ago(burnt/cracked valve, found after random comp test,,still blew turbo subaru wrx neighbour up our steep hill regularly)the honda goes the same i feel on 95,ive tried both of course, again not a dyno test but if your not into high resultant compression 98 only burns slower and can in fact foul exhaust ports and plugs,at least its not like the old days with lead deposits, try it your self,,start with 95 for a good three tanks,,then go 98,see if you gain power,,if you try 98 first then go 95 itll be in your head your losing something,,thats marketing.
