What could it mean when my carbs are overflowing?
« on: May 19, 2010, 08:15:08 PM »
What up peeps! I went to fire up the bike today for the first time in a few weeks and the carbs started overflowing.
I now understand why we run the tubes from the carbs down (So it doesn leak gas all over my spotless motor and
brand new ceramic coated headed that needs to bake on the bike ;)...). I just went through the carbs a few weeks
ago and replaced all the O-rings and the needles and seats... Check her out!!! http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=66572.0
Any help or suggestions?

I have a 78 F2 for clearification.

THANKS
Gary.

Only from one carb?  Is it the overflow tube from the tank? I had a strange one on my 78 750f! The pipe inside my tank that drains over flow from under the fuel door had to be cracked somehow. If I filled the tank it would leak! I plugged te under side of my tanks overflow tube and no trouble.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

where is it overflowing from?

mine had a stuck float and thus kept pushing fuel into the carb, and fuel flooded the airfilter... happens sometimes if i don't use it for a while, quick tap on the float bowl with a screwdriver handle sorts mine out, until i get around to cleaning it again

You rebuilt your carbs but how clean is the gas tank? Maybe some dirt got from the tank to the carbs? On the side stand or centre (center) stand? Engine off or running?

Don't forget to check your fuel tap. It may not be turning off completely and just drip, drip dripping away. I chased all sorts of imaginary problems with the carbs before it was drawn to my attention. Problem solved with a good clean out and new washer. Too easy. Good luck. ^^

Tap on the bowls with the handle of a screwdriver.  The floats can get a little sticky when the bike has been sitting.

Pull the carbs, pull the bowls, and re-check float levels.

I have a similar issue. When I park, I sometimes get gas dripping from an overflow tube. I think what is happening is that the float catches on the carb body which holds it open just a bit, and only on one carb. I haven't checked float heights but I just turn the tap off when I park.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.

The floats were just stuck! A tap on the bowls and no more leaking. Now I might need to clean the tank.
from the looks of it though its very clean.

Isn't it nice when it turns out to be something simple? :)

Next time you have the bowls off, take out the float hinge pins and polish them up to help keep them from sticking.
