"What the heck" - is this part for -- challenge part II
« on: January 31, 2006, 09:45:35 PM »
TT, you'd probably know this: on my cb550F, there is a bracket that slips over and cradles the frame just beneath where the coils mount. my K models don't have this, so i can't look at them for reference, and the computer i'm currently on won't let me access servicehonda fiche diagrams. what is that for? i assume has to do with the wire harness, as a major portion of it goes through this area on the F models. i had it powder coated with the frame, but now i don't know its function.  ??? ???

Not sure what you're describing.  Is this the 1/3 moon looking part?  Post a pic, I'll probably recognize it.

Yep, that's what I thought.  Part 18  "protector".
http://www.crotchrocket.com/fiche_image_popup.asp?fveh=2943&section=123154&year=1976&make=Honda&category=Motorcycles&dc=947&name=WIRE+HARNESS+%40+IGNITION+COIL+%40+HORN

It goes on in the same hole the ignition coils mount to on the frame.  It keeps wires/cables from chaffing on the edge of the frame stampings and actually fits over and around the join.  If your frame is powder coated, the coat may be too thick for it to fit back onto the frame.  As I recall, it goes on the forward hole.

I went out to my 77 Cb550F to take a picture of the installation.  Neither of my 77s have that part. And, there are no wires or cables running through there to "protect" anyway.  My stocker hasn't been apart so I think Honda deleted it for that year.  If you still need a picture I can get one of my 76 F  in tommorrow's daylight.  It's in the un-electrified dark garage out back.

Let me know if this isn't clear enough.

i'll get a picture when i can (my shop is not at home), but it doesn't look like that (paul). it has two screw holes, and slips over the frame, in the hole where the coils go. okay, stupid of me to post a question with no picture....i'll get back.

TT, now that i look at the diagram you posted, it is indeed part #17 in that diagram. is that the "protector" you are talking about?

No, #17 is the junction box mount.  Drape that over the frame in the slot where the coil mounts, so the big flat spot is on the left of the frame.  The orientation is like that in the diagram, with the head stock of the frame on the lower left.

If you need a pic of it mounted on the bike, let me know.

Two Tired,         Nice to know that I'm not the only one who has found and uses "crotchrocket.com.

I found it a little while back and use it quite often to check if parts on ebay will fit my bikes. I have a
few parts books but, this site fills in for the rest. I've brought it up once or twice but, didn't get much response. I never have gotten into that service Honda site. I'm always looking to check for better manuals too. I've got some Yamahas that I found manuals at the Yamaha site but, I know that isn't the subject we're on. Later on, Bill

Bill440cars,
I just used the link GroovieGhoulie posted above.  (thanks GG)  The site does have nice information.  But navigation within it is problematic for me.  I have to type destinations into the address header, guessing what it should be, as the hot button selections keep reseting to the same start page.
I don't know if it is a site problem on their end or just another bug in Mircoshlock Internet Explorer 5.

I have microfiche to some of my bikes, but no viewer.  I have to go down to the MC shop or library to look stuff up in them.

Can't you get your fiche scanned?  Then you wouldn't need a scanner and you could share the joy. ;D

Hey TT, no prob on the fiche.  I think your problem might be a IE5 problem as I used it fine with IE6 and Firefox.  I highly recommend Firefox.

thanks TT...mounting is not really a problem. it's on the bike right now. i knew exactly where it came off, and it's pretty obvious if you know the general area where it goes, i just couldn't remember what the hell it was doing before i removed it!

now that i'm looking at the diagram, what is section 11? am i just looking at it wrong and it's something really obvious?

Thats an electrical junction box or wiring cover.  Not all the harness interconnects are in the headlight bucket.  Some of the electrical control (From Bars, I think) connections happen there.  And, that box shields the bullet connectors from the elements (like driving rain).
Anyway that box fits onto that bracket (17) you put on the frame.
