550 cylinder assy. stuck to crancase.
« on: February 01, 2006, 10:24:06 PM »
What's the best way to separate the cylinder assy. from the engine block without breaking off cooling fins? I'm afraid to pry too hard, but it seems like prying is the only way. Pistons aren't frozen
in bores and as far as I know, all  related bolts have been removed. suggestions?..thanks  jim

Prying, tapping with a rubber mallet is the only way I know. Take your time, tap and/or pry a little from different directions. Be carefull, as you said the fins break easily. I don't know the 550 engine, but make real sure you don't have another bolt in a recess some place not easily seen. These gaskets get really stuck on with time. Once you do get it apart, some spray on gasket remover makes clean up a whole lot easier.

I sem to remember that there is a small rectangular slot at each end for the purpose of inserting a SMALL prying instrument just for this purpose.

I poured Marvel Mystery oil into the stud holes, and let it sit for several days.  Even after that, there was a lot of tapping with a rubber mallet, and wiggling the jugs back and forth before it finally came off.

Perseverance is the key.

The 2 locating dowels are probably rusted up. Find out where they are and use penetrating oil.

Thanx gentlemen. I'll try everything when I finally get back to it this weekend. The theory about the dowels rusting sounds right, so will go after that first.
