voltage drop at Dyna-s ignition?
« on: May 18, 2010, 07:25:55 AM »
A quick question--
I've rewired my project bike (CB400f) with mostly new connectors, shorter runs, etc. and added a Dyna-S ignition and 5 Ohm coils.  The bike is not ready to run quite yet, but I was testing the circuits and noticed that I have 12.2 volts at the coils but when I plug in the power to the ignition it drops to 11.3 volts.  First question--is this in any way a significant amount to worry about or will it affect running?  Next question, would it be worth running the ignition relay modification?  I don't know if it would make a difference, since the dyna-s would still be drawing power from the same source and may continue to rob the voltage.  I suppose I could run the ignition's power wire to another source instead.  Does the voltage drop indicate anything at all being wrong with the ignition?  Last question--might this issue disappear once the bike is running, or does that make a difference?

I know this probably isn't a big deal, but I've got time before my tank and seat arrive and I'm looking for stuff to do...  Here's a link to my build thread:

Thanks!

Yep it does, thanks!  I was thinking it could be a voltage sag from the battery under load, but voltage at the battery when the ignition switch is on is still 12.3v.  I may try the relay tonight--it looks really simple and I have all the fixin's already.
