NEED HELP! CLUTCH PROBLEM ON '77 CB500
« on: November 30, 2009, 06:56:20 AM »
I was replacing the oil switch on my 1975 CB 500 and knocked my clutch adjuster on the case out, (the big one on the case cover) I put it back in, but now I can't get my clutch to disengage the gears at all. I tightened the clutch cable all the way down at the grip, but I still can't get it to disengage the transmission so I can't shift into first without the bike dying. Any suggestions?

Do you mean the 1975 CB500 or the 1977 CB500? You have mentioned both in the same thread....

#$%*, I meant the 1975. Also, how do you get that personal signature at the end of your posts? I'm new to the forum world

Hi Befuchs -
You may have lost the ball bearing in the adjuster.
Do you remember seeing it? It sits inside the
cylinder shaped part of the adjuster and acts as
a throwout bearing.

You can include a signature by going into your
profile. Look at the tabs at the top of the page after
you have logged in.

No I don't remeber seeing it. To get it back together would I have to take the entire cover apart into separate components?

no, you just need to take the cover of again. The ball should be nesting loosly in the hole where the pushrod coming from the clutch goes into and adds to the needed push rod length. If it's not there its to short and will not work as you just experienced. If you find and replace it, add some grease to it. That will keep it from falling out when assembling the cover.

The Honda manual says...

Reassembly.

1. Assemble the clutch lifter rod into the main shaft so that the spherical end is toward the right hand side.
2. Apply grease to the clutch lifter and assemble it to the left crankcase cover together with the adjuster. Tighten the lock bolt and reconnect the clutch cable to the clutch lifter.
3. Install the clutch lifter rod, set the steel ball into the clutch lifter, and mount the left crankcase cover with four 6mm screws.

Clutch Adjustment.

1. To provide play in the clutch cable, loosen the clutch adjuster lock bolt.
2. Turn the adjuster clockwise until a slight resistance is felt, and then turn counter-clockwise about 3mm. At that point, tighten the lock bolt.
3. Adjust play in the clutch cable at the lock nut and adjuster. The play should be 10-20mm. Perform micro adjustment with the adjuster at the clutch lever end.

knocked out the big bit with the slot that you can see from outside?that you use to adjust it with?it should be clamped with a fork type affair inside and another external bolt locks it in place, are you sure the flange on it hasnt broken?ive had that once and the die cast piece just dropped out.
