Can Comstars be chromed?
« on: May 18, 2010, 11:04:16 AM »
I have a cafe project going and I'm using 78F frame, forks, brakes which kinda leaves me with no inexpensive way to keep all the disc brakes without using the Comstars. I actually have a Lester Mag for the front but no luck in finding one for the disc brake rear yet so.. I'm thinking that maybe I could chrome them? I'm probably going to take all the calipers and hardware down and have it all polished, anyone ever polished Comstars? The front appears to be all aluminum but the rear I think has steel *spokes* with an aluminum rim. Any other ideas on how to make Comstars "cool"?

Take the plastic rivet covers off and polish them until you can see your own skull.  I have a set of nearly polished ones and they look snazzy.  I have to polish them up to a really nice shine, but right now they are already pretty good looking.

i'd get them plated with a nice clear coat over that.  if you want REALLY shiny, then polishing that complex of a shape will kill you, your buffer, whatever you use!  either send them out to get polished and then get a clear powdercoat on top to keep them easily cleaned, or have them chromed properly and have a spray clear coat on top.

I polished front and rear lips and cleaned spokes up. Painted the wheel black leaving the polished lip.

Some time and can of wheel paint=custom look.

Sorry to hijack PJ
But Luke, can you say what size of tire you have on your rear wheel.  And yes your rim does look good.

Bridgstone spitfires,  stock size. Bought online.  Front tire was REALLY hard to seat. Went thru a couple regular tubes and then put in a heavy duty,  warmed it up and pumped it up till it seated.  I stood behind some 3/4"plywood. ;D

I dont have any pictures and they're stored away.  There are some pictures of polished commies out on the interwebs though.  I've run across them in my quest to slay time.

Chrome I can see but why the clear. As long as you keep them clean with windex you shouldn't have an issue. Chrome polish is for rusty chrome not for cleaning.

More than likely, yeah, they can be chromed.$$$$$$$$$$.

whatever you do DO NOT REMOVE THE BOLTS AND TRY TO DISASSEMBLE THE SPOKES/RIM/HUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DO NOT LET YOUR PLATER DO THIS EITHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It will destroy the rim! They were assembled in special jigs and you will not be able to get them true(or safe!) again.
