I don't know if this referred  to me or not but i was hit by an idiot in the wet that decided to overtake me on a 25mph corner in the pissing rain and slid into me pushing me into a 4 foot deep and square concrete drainage ditch,  i was thrown about 30 feet head first into a tree which tore my helmet off, fracturing my skull and nearly ripping my lower jaw off, i layed in the bush for seven hours bleeding out before i was found,  if you have a way of avoiding #$%* wits that hit you from behind please let me {and Havoc Turbo} know, i really don't see any way of avoiding that at all...

Mick

Holy cow Mick.  That's some serious stuff.  The idiot that hit you didn't stop?

That is correct, he didn't stop, a kid on his way home from a party found me around midnight, i had the accident at around 5.30 in the afternoon.

i hope he took you straight to the hospital or stayed with you til the ambulance came!!

in response to everyone else that says you have to be a good rider AND have good gear.  gear or not, good rider or not, you can't avoid someone else's mistake while driving that day.  i always tell people it doesn't matter how good you are, how great your gear is, it's all about that ONE asinine/brain fart moment the cager has while driving one day that can ruin the rest of your life.  that's why they teach you to ride defensively.  i LOVE riding, but some days, i just don't feel like it.  others can't do anything but ride, whether it be personal choice or the fact that their bike is all the have.  either way, i'm always watching what other people CAN do and what they ARE doing.  RR was nowhere at fault there, whatsoever!  him and HT are still here sharing their wisdom because of the GEAR they were wearing.  it's hard to see someone coming up on your ass end at 80 mph, or someone trying to overtake you on a blind corner in the pissing rain.

but i started this thread to see what everyone was wearing, how it worked for them, and how it's worked if it's "served its purpose" before.  other than that, lets try to keep the banter to a minimum and avoid any "bashing" of other peoples wisdom.  we should be so thankful that RR and HT are still here, and able to ride with us and share their experience.

I wear leather boots, gloves (deerskin leather for hotter days or Olympia ones for cold and rain), Olympia mesh/armored overpants with a zip out lining for cold and rain (best pants ever!), leather jacket with armor or textile jacket with armor or mesh jacket with armor, full face with modular face or HJC open face with shield and flip down shades... and I keep my eyes open and scanning all the time. I anticipate that everyone out there is trying to hit me. I relax but I'm very aware.

19 years ago today, I was hit by a teenager playing chicken with his buddies. I was rolling along and came to a T in the road. I had the straight away, he had the stop. He blew through it to make a right turn, across my side of the road and wiped me out. He had no insurance, no license and didn't even get out of the car to help. Luckily, a cop was cresting the hill right then and got EMS on the way within a minute. Neighbors also ran out with blankets and called my family awhile. 2 guys that were behind me stopped on the side of the road and pulled the bike off of me... they said I drug my pipes on the road (saw the sparks) to avoid the guy. My left foot got put through the transmission cover, my heel got ripped off and laid at my toes from it. My left leg bones got blown out through the muscle tissue and I was missing over 2" of bone from my tibia. We never found it but my Mom swears that every time my leg hurts, it's some dog chewing on that piece of bone.  ;D The pipes burned my leg muscles and when I looked down after they got the bike off of me, my leg was in a twisted Z formation from the knee down. My own ambulance crew picked me up with the medic unit and rushed me to the level 1 trauma hospital 20 min away. They pushed fluids into me the whole way. I ended up in hypovolemic shock from losing a few pints in the street. They shocked my heart rhythm back on the way in.

I knew the docs there from being a volunteer on the ambulance and asked for Dr Cooke. He came in and did my surgery. He warned me that I probably wouldn't wake up with my leg but he would try his best. He wanted to do something kinda different and asked if he could give it a try on me. It was my only hope of saving it. I let him make me a guinea pig. I woke up with 2 legs many hours later. I puked all over my PACU nurse and sent her some of my flowers later. I had 8 more operations over the next 2 years, bone grafts, lost a huge chunk of the inside of my leg muscle from the burns, skin grafts, hardware changes... my bone wasn't growing back together since I didn't have a piece longer than 3" so a year into it all we did another graft and put a stimulator (shock treatment) for 10 hrs a day for a year. In the end, it took me 2.5 years to get out of my last hard cast and into a walking boot. I did my own PT and learned to walk on my own because they told me it was useless and they couldn't help me. #$%*s.

I wish I had worn my boots that day but I didn't. I wore my sneakers. The boots would have helped a lot because I wouldn't have lost the bone and I wouldn't have had the burns. I broke my helmet instead of my head. I saved my hands by wearing gloves. I saved my arms and torso skin by wearing a jacket.

It doesn't keep you from getting hit or going down hard. It makes it more possible to live through it and recover faster. It may save your life. Do what you want though. I can only tell you from experience and now working in a trauma hospital that it makes a huge difference. We can always tell who had gear on and who didn't.

Get decent insurance that covers YOU, the bike is the least of the bill. Keep the rubber side down. Have a great riding season ladies and gents.  ;)

Great stories of survival Mick & MickeyX!  While no gear is completely idiot proof I believe it will go a long way towards helping you come out of it for the better. I haven't purchased all the gear I want as of yet, but as money allows, I'm working on it.

Helmet is currently a Shoei St.Cruz, but I'm looking to upgrade to an RF-1100...

Jacket is a Speed & Strength 'Under the Radar'...

Gloves are Speed & Strength 'Moment of Truth'...

Boots are high ankle Ecco hiking boots.

He got more points toward his license he had already lost and he got ticketed for blowing the stop sign. I got the medical bills. Thank god for good work insurance because the motorcycle insurance didn't end up paying for anything on my side. I get good coverage now, to protect me and mine. The bike is secondary.

i dropped an old yammy it400 making a right turn and locked the tyre(knobby)on some oil and went straight down, slid into the intersection knowing cars were behind me,the bike hadnt stalled and i was ok so as quick as i went down i was back up ,stabbed it in to first and buzzed off,man that would have looked funny, didnt even break the mirror,i had the old rossis on with the buckles up the side which were ground through, the out come of that little slide would have been different wearing joggers.

hey guys!  just wondering what kind of riding gear everyone wears.

I have a Scorpian Exo Helmet and an Alpinstars armored jacket with a pair of black gloves (generic) I love my setup. The Alpinstars is the best piece of gear I own. It stays warm in the colder weather with the liner in and really cool in the summer with the lining out. It fits very well too. The Exo helmet is a great piece too. My setup works great for me.  :)

I managed to hi-side off the CBR600 by getting on the front brake way too hard with one hand on the bars when a car stopped quick in front of me. I was in the process of lowering the visor on my helmet after leaving a traffic light. Totally my fault as there was plenty of room to stop with far less use of the brake. In my defense, I sometimes ride the CB's and the CBR within hours and the CBR front brake is many times more effective. Must.....be.....more ......bike.....aware!

I was....still am....wearing a RF1000 helmet, Cortech mesh jacket, jeans with knee and butt armor, lightweight mesh riding gloves, and Oxtar boots. The helmet had a few scratches, the right boot has two spots ground into the leather, the jacket had several holes ground thru the mesh, the gloves untouched, and the jeans wore thru the fabric over the right knee. I had a sore shoulder for several weeks, but otherwise was unscathed. Fortunately, the cars behind me managed to stop or the outcome would have been a lot worse. ::) I rode the bike home, but it needed everything on the right side replaced.  :(

I now have a new Cortech jacket and I use the old one when I ride in Thailand with the best helmet I could find there. The locals there look at anyone with even a helmet on as an alien.  :o I carry my boots and jeans over as they are ultra expensive to buy there.

My heart goes out to you survivors, and to those of you who have lost friends to the road. I share your pain.

July 4 1983, A kid doing donuts in the AM//PM parking lot at 1am (it was actually the 5th), pulled out across 2 lanes in front of me and slammed on his brakes. Other than just not being on the road, don't know how I could have avoided him. Hit him at about 30mph, bike smacked my ankle into his bumper as I flew over the top of the car and landed on my head. I still remember the sensation of flying and thinking "tuck and roll..." Busted my full face Bell Star, blew out the zipper of my vinyl jacket, but it and the jump pants over jeans and combat boots kept the skin on. Had old Army leather covers for gloves. Got a hairline fracture of the tibia that has since secreted calcium deposits that cause me worsening problems as I get older, along with some neck and back pain. In '95 Got hit broadside while driving my Toyota Starlet by a guy in a Dodge Ram who blew a country road stop sign at 55. Again, other than just not being there..and how can you do that? Got bashed knees, neck, and shoulder injuries from that one, and a helicopter ride because it took them 45 minutes to cut me out of the car. So, I got some arthritis, was on opiate therapy for about 5 yrs until this past Christmas. Last summer, I went on a long ride with a friend and his gf, from Portland to Seattle to Boise and back, in the hills outside of Prineville, after 4 days on the road at 10:30 at night he sees a deer in the road and pulls in front of me while trying to stop. I never saw the deer, all I saw was his brake lights come on and get real close real fast, I couldn't avoid clipping his Vetter at about 20mph and I went over the bars. My bike took his down, he rolled off to the left, she got stuck between the bikes. Separated my shoulder, and busted my second Bell full face helmet, they were both wearing Half helmets but got no scratches on them, we were all wearing leather jackets, gloves, jeans and boots, mine shredded at the knee and I got some rash there, but my 3/4 length coat saved my hip and shoulder skin, the leathers and gloves kept everyone's skin and fingers intact. She rode in the ambulance with me to the ER, she had a second degree pipe burn on her thigh and they weren't sure about my shoulder. They ended up finishing the ride home, but my bike was down and I spent the night in the ER. I think about this one a lot. Obviously I was too close to avoid him but I was totally unprepared for someone to try to stop like that. I spent a lot of time in the foothills around Sacramento where there are lots of deer, I've always been taught to slow down and go around, it's safer to run over the dog than run over the kid on the sidewalk trying to avoid the dog, or hit the deer rather than go over a cliff trying to avoid it....but he's actually had 2 deer, at different times, jump on him while he was riding and knock him down. I can't fault a guy for not wanting that to happen again...but I still don't think I'd try to stop if I saw a deer... and I'll be lots further back if I'm riding with others in deer country again...and in spite of it all, there are still days when I would go riding shirtless and helmetless if I could....

This was  a great and scary post for this newbie to read. I'd been shopping for an open face helmet, but after reading all of your posts, I'm going to go with a full face one instead, I'll just have to suffer through Atlanta's unbearable humidity, but at least I'll keep all of my teeth in my head. I did order a Honda armored jacket the other day. I'm still looking for shoes and gloves. I'll buy leather for the cooler weather in about 4 months. I am a very experienced bicyclist, so hopefully my survival instincts will work on my cb as well. I always assume that everyone on a bike is an #$%* out to tag me! That mindset has allowed me to ride my bicycle here for over 31 years without one accident, I hope I didn't just jinx myself. thanks for the post!

I was doing about 20-25mph, they figured he was doing about 45 through a stop sign around a corner.  It was kind of a blind corner to me because of the hedgerow that used to be there at the sign. Until the front of his car cleared the end of the hedge, I couldnt' see that little car. There was no way to totally avoid him other than to just not be there. That I've never questioned. I only lost consciousness right when I got hit and when I landed, I snapped to again. I remember everything else. By turning as I did and trying to accelerate past the front of him, I actually avoided getting shot over the cliff into the trees or ending up in the river. That would have been worse. Instead, I landed on the sidewalk and the bike followed my trajectory enough to come to rest and fall over onto me. I just wish I had put on my boots. I usually rode with them but had just gotten off of work, was hungry, needed to go to my brother's house about something... you know, the kind of stuff that seems harmless at the time but can make the difference later on if something happens.

Oh, btw, he didn't get worse not because the cop didn't want to, his father was on the town council. They are the ones to vote to hire/fire cops, vote on the police budget...as I understand it, he had something to say about his son going to jail over it. The kid learned a lot from it. ::) He learned that he didn't have to pay up if he was wrong, that he could just skate by, that he didn't have to care at all. (No one from the family even called to see if I lived.) He amounted to pretty much nothing and even if I had sued, and I had lawyers telling me it was cut and dry, I wouldn't have ever seen any $$$. I chose to get on with my life and healing. I chose to work on myself, how I look at life and the people around me instead of dwell on the negative. I'm still walking and riding, the car and the kid are in the junkyard. I say I won.  ;D

I always assume that everyone on a bike is an #$%* out to tag me!

Heh..sure hope that's a typo...

Mickey, yer a winner for sure, in my book!! The injuries are bad enough, the insolence and disregard take it to a whole new level. And Mick, I can only imagine laying there unable to move hour after hour listening to fewer and fewer people going by...jeezzz....good on ya mate, glad ya made it!!   In addition to gettin bounced around a couple times myself, I've seen and known more than a couple others who died on AND off the road. Had another post typed out, but it would be more appropriate in an "accident" thread.    Sooo.. I also have a pair of fringed leather chaps that are nice and warm, but as I mentioned, the 3/4 coat saved the skin on my cheek that wouldn't be covered by chaps either, so I'm shopping for leather pants. Leather tends to get heavy and soggy when it rains here, I have a nice Stearns rain suit to keep the leather dry (when I remember to put it on), and snow board pants if it gets really cold. If it gets REALLY cold, I have a TourMaster snowmobile suit and really big mittens. Currently considering a heated visor for my HJC CL-10 helmet and some electric gloves or grips and the other day I saw an ad for electric  boots....with my bad ankle, I can't pull on "wellies" or cowboy type riding boots, got to be lace ups or a zipper up the inside. I have a decent pair of steel toe boots, but boots that come up over my ankle frequently give me a lot of pain, so I usually wear hiking type boots that top right at the ankle. Kind of a weak spot in cold protection, my pant legs don't always cover the top of the boot. Drug the toe of my Timberlines when I unloaded last yr, they lasted a couple more months before my toe finally popped thru the top. If my toe doesn't fit between the peg and the shifter (or if I'm wearing my nice shoes), I shift with my heel instead.

I take it you never raced bicycles. I had three wrecks in three consecutive weekends. One of my wrecks in a Criterium
was scored a 10 by the height I obtained with my dismount. ;D Glad to hear you getting a full face and gear.
As I said in another post, I grew up riding in the heat and have found that good perforated leathers do
not cause undue discomfort in the heat. In fact, they seem to insulate me from the heat a bit.

I didn't hear the traffic mate, i was in a coma for a couple of weeks, my head was hit pretty hard. My head hit the tree and it ripped my helmet off, it stayed done up so it took my jaw with it. I also nearly ripped my left hand off as well, i don't remember but the docs said i must have put my hand out to stop me hitting the tree, they had to cut my jacket off to get my arm out, my hand was sticking out 90 degrees to the left and there was splintered bone sticking out everywhere, it had pierced the artery in my arm but only slightly, so i lost quite a lot of blood while laying in the bush, my wrist still isn't pretty and i get pain in it when the weather cools off or it rains. I was in the same boat as Mickey because i had lost a critical amount of blood. It definitely changed the way i ride, i have eye's in the back of my head now {not from the accident.. ;D } I now expect every car in every street to pull out on me, it keeps me alert and alive for the time being.

At least with the range of summer temperatures we have in Florida...usually mid 90's...the only time the heat is rough is stopped at lights. At other times, I think wearing the mesh jacket is cooler and it certainly stops sunburn and windburn which I would get in no time. I have gotten so use to a full face helmet that I would feel naked without it.

Most places have lockers or somewhere you can store gear when you visit. One of those...believe it or not...is the Jack Daniels distillery in Tenn.  ;D

That is what I wanted to hear! Never expect an automobile to do what they are suppose to do.

If you come to an intersection that has limited visibility, just figure there is a car coming that isn't going to stop.

Look in your rear view mirrors a lot.

Experience is the best teacher, but you never know when you are going to receive your final lesson :o

Dressing for the crash is good, avoiding it is better.

actually, less than 3% of accidents on a motorcycle come from the rear. Most motorcyclist check their mirrors to often.
Suggested rate of checking  mirrors is 10secs by Lee Parks (going from recall here as well as the percentage so don't sue me).
For me with my car encounter. I could not believe the car would not stop till it didn't. Eye contact with driver means nothing.
She saw me, knew I was there, and hit me anyway.

As for predicting when a deer will appear, good luck!  ;)

I constantly see deer, both on the bike and in the car.  I only came close to hitting one once; in a car.  The closest I ever came to hitting an animal on the bike was a raccoon just a couple weeks ago.
