Speedo Troubleshooting/Help - 72 cb750
« on: May 18, 2010, 11:50:24 AM »
I replaced my speedo cable a couple months ago and it was working for the most part until a few weeks ago. I got to about 70mph and then it just dropped and hasn't worked since. Just curious if anyone has any troubleshooting suggestions so I can try and determine if I need to rebuild or replace the speedo. Any help would be great.

I'm not an expert, but I've been trouble shooting mine for the past bit.  is there any movement where the cable attaches to the gear in the front axle if you were having problems and replaced the cable only, the gear could have been your issue.  should be stationary.  mine moves all over the place and I loose my speedo occasionally.  Not sure how, but I'm going to replace it as soon as I have a spare dollar to my name...

Yea the gear definitely moves around. I noticed that the other day when I was tinkering on it and thought that might be the issue. I guess I will look into replacing that first and see if that does the trick. Thanks for the tip!

I am just offering my .02.  I know very little about these bikes as I've only had mine for 3 months.  Before you get too involved with any repair I would wait to see if someone else on here had more input.  Like I said, I can't even tell you HOW to replace the gear.  I just know it shouldn't move back and forth.  Hopefully somebody Who has been working on these beauties as long as we've been alive can add their thoughts.  Their opinions are worth far more then mine.  You might be on the right path here...

good luck and welcome.  Atl isn't all that far from Charlotte, maybe I'll meet you on the open road sometime.

I actually have a mechanic that specializes on Honda's and has already worked on my bike a couple times so I'm going to check with him also. I will let you know if I find anything out and I have found a few resources already on how to replace it so I will be reading into those as well.

Charlotte isn't that far at all. We have a motorclub here called The Dirtys. You should start a Charlotte branch! We have a few riders on cb's, old bmw's and other vintage bikes.
