1977 CB750A Carburetor Solenoid valve voltage?
« on: May 16, 2010, 03:48:28 PM »
Hey guys, new owner of a 77 CB750A. After a week of cleaning and tweaking I've finally got her running. However... There is a solenoid valve on the carbs that seems to not be working properly. I notice one of the hoses runs from the solenoid to the throttle opener on the carb.

What is the voltage supposed to be?(my meter says less than a volt going to it no matter if it's in neutral, or drive, which doesn't seem right)

If anyone out there has a 77 CB750A, if you could be so kind as to lift your seat and take a reading of the voltage going to it when running(neutral, and drive) I would appreciate it.

Thanx,

Ved

It should be 12v. If you listen close enough you'll be able to hear the solenoid open when you put it in gear without the engine running. The relay that controls the solenoid is mounted to the front of the battery box on the shifter side. Make sure the wires are plugged in, there is a short jumper that goes between the relay and the speed sensor which is mounted under the gas tank. I found this 3" jumper disconnected on mine. There are (3) things to check with this system - the relay on the battery box, the speed sensor under the tank (its silver and round) and the solenoid itself.

Good luck!

The voltage at the solenoid should change from zero volts to battery voltage when shifted into gear. The current is controled by the changing relay with an input from the speed warning unit.

Yes...and a 4th. thing!, the switch behind the shifter cover..... has a brown/red and a blue/yellow wire to it.... activates the solenoid when shifter is in 'L' or 'D'... check it this way... b/r should be to ground when 'D' selected, bl/y to ground when 'L' selected... good luck.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
If your sure it's an ignition problem; it's carbs....

I agree with the 12v when on answer.

As a clarifier - the actual speed sensing unit is located in the speedometer.  When less than about 17 mph (don't remember the actual number), the "speed warning unit" (which is just a relay) is energized and its contact closes.  This relay contact is in series with both the solenoid valve and the "changing relay".  The changing relay is controlled by a transmission switch - and is energized when in Lo or High (or 1 and 2).

If your Lo/High (or 1/2) lights are working, then your tranmission switch is good.

It may be hard to hear the click - since your shifting at the same time.  You may be able to feel it, though.

It may be easier (to hear it click) to locate the "changing switch" wires (comes out of the left side of motor heading towards the left side cover area) and with the bike in gear, ignition on (set your handlebar engine shutoff switch to off), disconnect and reconnect the changing switch wires. The solenoid should be heard clicking.  You have two wires, one for lo, and one for high.

I tested my solenoid with a 9V battery before installing my carb set this spring.  It is easy to hear it that way, too.

No clicking?  Other than wiring, check the speed warning unit and the changing relay.

At the changing relay, with the bike ignition on, (set your handlebar engine shutoff switch to off),  you should have 12v across the green and the green/black wires.

At the speed warning unit, with the bike ignition on, (set your handlebar engine shutoff switch to off),  you should have continuity across the green and brown/red wires (my schematic is hard to read - it looks like brown/red).
1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

There's a nice diagram of the solenoid on page 2-13 in the service manual.  You can download the manual in sections at hondamatic.net.  The info your looking for is in Manual 1.  I also remember a section that described testing the solenoid, I not sure in which section.  It just had you connect it to a 12 VDC source and verify air flow through the solenoid when it opened.  I tried to attach a scan of the diagram page, but it was too big (746KB) to attach.

Doh! (smacks self on forehead)

I was looking through the carb section of the shop manual. I flipped back to 2-13 and there it was! lol

Thanks, I'm heading over to the shop now to have a look. Thanks again to all that helped.
