36 tooth rear sprocket..??
« on: May 20, 2010, 04:37:04 AM »
g'day...anyone whacked a 36 tooth rear sprocket on a 400F...

..on a recent first long trip of 1350Klms  ( about 850 miles ) I kept looking for another top gear...

..so maybe a 36 would give it some longer legs...I figure with the 466CC kit in my bike
the increased torque would handle it ok..

..what do you think?

I had a similar feeling with my 550. I finished up using 17/34 sprockets. Turns out to be the same spec for a 500. I came down from a 37 rear. I'm not sure how it's going to turn out now that I've fitted a slightly higher rear tyre, but time will tell.

G'day 333...currently got the standard 17 front, 38 rear...

and Frosty..34 rear...whoa, that's getting way down....what rpms are you pulling at 100 clicks..?

I've got about 5400....

do you feel the bike has a tendency to bog down a bit in first gear...or that you have to knock it down a cog
more often than with the 37 ?

..whereabouts in Qld are you..?

Then 36 should do what you want.  But keep in mind that these bikes like the upper RPM ranges.  Cruising at 7 or 8K is just lovely for these motors.

Now you get to hear what I always say in chain threads.  Replace chain AND sprockets together.  They all wear at the same rate.  The exception might be if you decide that 36 is wrong for you within 4-500 miles, you could just change the one.

tripple 3...ok..got that....as you say I'll guess I'll know the story in a short trip...both sprockets and chain are new,,,done about 1200 miles...so I figure if the 36 does the job then I figure to just change this and not the other bits would be ok...

was really surprised to hear the 500 goes as low as 34...

thanks for the input...Skud

gday skud and frosty,i thought ide try a 37 on the rear of my 500,man way too low for the street or highway, the 550 has a taller internal gear reduction than the 500 and the 37 is the factory fitment for the 550,the bike went great through the hilly hinterland where i live but after a short while i returned home and changed it back to the 34,i couldnt source a 36 or 35,the "chain gang" in brisbane who can make any thing for everything are not really in buisiness anymore for some reason so i bought from a catalouge, ballinas not too far from me,well try and have a beer eh?

Gády Traveller.

....15/.37..is that on a 400F?

now lets see if I have the maths right..

the 15 will raise the revs right..?

the 37 will lower the revs ..right?

..so what rpms are you pulling at 100kph or 60mph?

so Dave ..yep about an hour up the road...I'm new to these bikes and haven't seen a 500 or 550 on the road yet.
there is a couple of 400s down here  that I know of....so a bit of a squirt would be of great interest...

.seems like the gearing in both the 500 and 550 is different to the 400F...although the jump from 34 to 37 would sure have been a big one
I want to go the other way....longer legs..

....the hinterland country in our neck of the woods is about as good as it gets for motor cickling I reckon..

cheers    Skud

foot note....maybe it's just that I've messed around with British iron all my life and hence the sound of all those revs is making me a little twitchy/ nervous/ startled...!!
compared to the bonk bonk bonk of thr Brit gear,,,mechanically speaking of course..

..and up until I restored this 400F, in the last 12 months, I have been a Jap bike virgin......??!!

..but now that I'm bordering on old and doddery, I figured what the heck..might jolly up the metabolism...

...and so it goes...

yeah good one skud, ive had lots of two stroke dirt bikes(and a few four strokes) and we always lowered the gearing to the max, like by ten teeth!!we rode years around the castslemaine victoria district with nice sweeping power slide fire tracks to really down and up little goat tracks and creeks to almost un walkable sections,so a nice low first gear was in order,i doubt my last 250 yamaha would have topped 90 kays, but well suited to play racing with mates in the bush,i figured wrongly that 3 teeth wouldnt do much after my dirt bike experiences, ive had a few road bikes but never tampered with the original gearing,i was trying to source from the chain gang a 35 tooth which they can custom make but its not happening,,so i just got the 37,,ive got a couple of 550 motors so itll come in handy further down the track,,yeah the 400 gearing im guessing would be lower overall to the larger capacities, these are all a fairly revvy engine and are lower geared compared to the pommie stuff of old, have a look in the 400 section and im sure the specs as to reduction etc are there..these little jappers do rev hard on the freeway!

Hi Dave,

http://www.jtr.com.au/talon/index.htm

here's the phone number, they don't mention the custom sprockets on the site but they definitely used to do them so it would be worth a call....07 32457499

The bike hasn't been on the road for 5 years or so, but I seem to remember 5,000 @ 100k. That's when I had an 80 series rear tyre though. I'm not sure what it'll be like now that I've changed to a 90 series, it looks a lot higher so I might well have to go back up. I'm hoping to finish refurb in June/July when I have some time off work.
It was pretty good at getting away from the mark, but then I'm not what you'd call a big fella. I used to carry a passenger quite often though & can't say I had any dramas then either.

My 550 stock was geared 17/37.  I am running 15/37.....I like the extra seat of the pants acceleration and torque I get.  As for rev's....not sure.....I have alot of room to get to 9,200 RPM!
