Topic: rusty spiders hiding under my paint.

Stripped the tank last night and found something pretty cool looking

Should I sand this or might that damage the tank exposing rust holes.  I'm thinking these are from the pre existing nicks in the paint.  What should I do?



second shot is just for fun.  nice get together followed by a dust up.

Did you strip the outside or inside of the tank?
And those rust spots were not on there previously?

outside.  no they weren't visible.  when I pulled the old paint and stripper off they where there.  I'll link a thread that has more pictures of the tank before the stripper.

See if you can sand down to bare metal sans rust, if the rust goes all the way through you are screwed anyway.

How is the interior?

the inside is not so good.  It was terrible.  I treated it with 3 part kreme, but I think about redoing it everyday.  I don't know if you can tell from the pix but it rises up from the tank.  It seems like rusting through would manifest diffently.

The Kreme deal has been derided by many a forum member, seems like people like the POR-15 cleaning/lining products better.
But, some people have had good results with the Kreme product.
I personally had mine etched and redkoted by a local radiator shop, works fine.

That tank might be toast if that is rust from the inside.

Inside=...."The works" cleaner and some nuts and bolts....shake the hell out of it, drain, rinse with baking soda and water, let dry.....good as new.

Outside=Sand the rust all the way off.  If it goes through.....either weld the holes up....(vent the tank to avoid explosion when doing this), or get another tank.

Interesting words this "Dust up"  You did not seem prone to violence at the wine bar.


The rust will need to be sanded smooth, or treated with a rust remover and then filled & sanded.  depends on how deep the rust is.

Had the same problem when I stripped my tank. sanded them down and prime and sanded and they dissapeared pretty good. I too think these spots are from small knicks in the paint. I couldnt see them with the paint on and the inside of my tank is decent. Not needing a coating as it is.

sorry for the confusion over "dust up".  It must just be the guys I grew up with around here.

 i.e.  "We're gonna go kick some dust up".  I just meant rode the bikes fast and hard on a trip to nowhere.  I would refer to a fight as a scrap or a brawl.  That didn't happen, thank goodness.  I wouldn't want MarkCB750 to think I was a hooligan...even though I am.

the tank cleaned up real nice.  sanded it with 320, 400, 600, 800 and it shines @ bare metal!  Everyone I talk to says this one needs to go back factory and I agree, but I really want something a little more gnarly then that.  May have to wait for the next bike(my wife wants a 350 or 400).

hey thanks for clearing that up asom,it was a bit hard to imagine a bunch of like minded old bike riders getting into a fight of sorts.
