its a 1977 cb550 k that i found in a trailer at Peterborough cycle salvage for $350 not running. i found that a few electrical connectors were corroded so i replaced them that got it running then i rebuilt the break caliper. i had the fun experience of finding a right side cover, and air filters because i did not have a air box. i took it for a ride in November of last year then put it in my apartment to be torn down. i sand blasted and epoxy primed painted the frame wa8555 gm jet black demenson base and omni clear coat. i soda blasted the carbs and cleaned and decreased the engine then painted it with dupla color engine spray bomb. put that back in the frame tore the rims down and polished all the bare aluminum laced the rims put new tires and tubes on then re-assembled every thing. striped the tank, repaired a few dents fixed the side covers and striped the gauges repaired the dent in the spedo and painted it all jet black base coat with basemaker and fine lilac peril mid coat that gave me the candy effect that i cant catch with the camera. i got a safety and put insurance on it and a plate took it for a ride and found that i had a oil leak from the top of the engine needed to replace the valve cover gasket i also had a engine noise turned out to be the cam chain i changed that.  me and a small engine mechanic cleaned the carbs and drilled the jets with the newfy jet kit to dial in the carbs for the emgo filters changed the points. now i have to figure why my front break is dragging i have a master rebuild kit coming from honda. i still want to get rid of those points and replace with a dyna s and coils. any tips on coil selection would be appreciated.
sorry i havent givin a run down til i have bean busy riding and fine tuning.

Easy to lose it in the rain on oily streets.

good thing i got the master rebuild kit in on Friday. from what i have been told  i was coming down a hill on lansdowne street in peterborough near applewood crescent. the person in front of me signaled at last min to turn left i made the mistake of hitting the front break and laid it down the bike was in the ditch and i slid into a oncoming pick up truck witch stopped just in time. i walked away with miner scratches and bruises. the bike forks are bent, head light mounting bracket is bent, rear signal light bar is bent, generator cover is scratched, the tank came off it has lots of scratches and one or 2 dents.

I doubt the driver would be cited in the US but, not sure how it is in Canada.

Hope your insurance might cover some of the damages; sounds like it's repairable as long as it didn't tweak the frame. May want a shop to check the frame and steering head for tweaks and cracks.
I'd be concerned about the steering head to frame welds if the front forks were bent.

You'll be able to convert to 750 front forks and brakes in the rebuild...

I've not laid down a bike yet and dread it but that day will arrive one day.  
There's an ebay seller who has sold some engine guards for the CB500 that fit the CB550.
They don't detract from the looks too much.

At least your bike isn't a '74 with some of it's one year or two years only kind of things...

thanks david i work at a licensed collision shop. we checked and measured the frame. they will right it off at $100 i am not going threw insurance. i may do the 750 swap. thanks for the suggestion.

i found a set of forks off a 1976 cb750 they are the same thickness, but are 2-3 inches longer and i have 1 inch longer shocks in the back shocks. do you think this will effect any thing?

From what I understand on bike chassis changes like that, the taller rear shock on a std setup would give you a better crisper turn in and enhance the steering.

With the triple trees can't you clamp the fork in the tree so it adjusts you front fork height. Granted having the
fork a couple inches proud of the top clamp would not look "normal" but is there anything preventing it?

Having a front fork that is 2-3 inches longer is going to change the angle of the rake on the bike. It will handle differently. It won't be as dramatic as a chopper but, it will handle differently.

Sounds like a question for TwoTired or Hondaman.
