Looking for vintage style new helmet
« on: April 25, 2010, 01:23:35 PM »
Hello, I have researched the archives and nothing came up for what i was looking for. I would like to get a new full face helmet but styled similar to a vintage helmet it must be dot approved and i'm willing to pay good money as my safety is worth it. I want a helmet like this:

http://www.helmetshop.de/NewOXeShop3.0.3/www.helmetshop.de/oxid/index.php?sid=27d93cec7667395cdaf98462172b7f10&cl=details&cnid=c153ebf8114730332.68054238&anid=9fb4232df90080730.45091806&pgNr=1

I would buy this but I can seem to find any safety ratings for it. Has anyone came across anything similar that is dot approved?

thanks!

Sorry I can't help you with your question, but that IS a really cool looking helmet. I've never heard of the Integral brand before (I assume it's a German brand?). I'd like to get something similar if it were DOT/SNELL approved.

hi guys thanks for the help, I don't like 3/4 helmets since they don't protect my face at all (some may say mine doesn't need the protection!) Thanks mcuozzo for the tip I did come across that, I kinda like those DOT approved ones, they look pretty mean. I might contact them to see how safe they are. I know I probably sound like a puss but I take my head pretty seriously.

I will keep you all posted if I come across some good stuff

try nolan helmets their n30 flashback is real close to what your after i think, but they do offer other styles of the vintage look and are very comfortable to wear. if i was to wear a helmet,i would probably spend the cheddar and get one.i've tried them on and liked how it felt.but i don't wear a helmet enough to justify the 300.00 price tag. hope this helps

Those Nolan helmets are SWEET! The N20 in plain black is $160 USD, is DOT, and has a decent face shield:

FYI- I have one of those Bandit helmets like in the first post. You should know they are expensive and are basically pretty flimsy, more of a novelty helmet. Thet also run small so be aware of that.
I have a modest collection of vintage fullface helmets, a couple nos, and they seem like they would offer more protection than the Bandit. It does look good though.

Speed King- i wear a size large i would guess i got a fat head even though im pretty short and skinny. Thanks for the tip about the bandit helmets

those Nolan helmets are nice but I'm really looking for more of a full face helmet that protects the chin are better. I crashed an ATV in the dunes and chipped a couple teeth wearing a 3/4 helmet.

Here is another cool one I came across

That helmet you show is cool!

Here's another I got my eye on.  It's a Nolan too.  The Nolan N30 Flashback.

Anyone have any experience with this helmet?

I also like the Davida's puddin' bowl style.  Not sure which I'd get, although I kind of need a face shield because I wear glasses (that is... until I get Lasik!).

Well... I figured what the hell?  So I just bought this one.  It was on closeout for cheap.

I like the helmet I'm currently wearing, but my eyes water too much (I wear glasses, so good goggles are hard to find).  The orange should go good with my new jacket too.   ;)

I just got the helmet (and jacket) today.  I got the helmet from BikeBandit, and this place has come up recently in a few threads.  I just got an email today that said I'd get tracking information when it was available, but I already had the helmet!  So I got to say the shipping was super fast, and I'm happy about that.

The helmet itself is a much different color than the picture suggests.  The orange is very bright, but it actually goes really well with the jacket, and cars should be able to see it a mile away, so it turned out well.  But the color is more like a hunter's orange, and some people might be turned off by that.  They should show the correct color in their ads.

The quality seems pretty good.  The liner comes out so you can wash it, and supposedly the visor comes off easy if you need to change it (I haven't tried it though).

The helmet is thicker than the HCI retro puddin' bowl I currently have.  And it'll take a while for me to get used to it.  But it is surprisingly comfortable.

The only thing left to do is try it out on the bike.  And maybe get a few pictures of it.  After I do a road test, I'll post more opinions on the helmet.

Thanks for the update Soichiro!  High vis blaze orange is probably not a bad thing.  Sounds like the fit and finish is good, let us know how it works in the wind.

I've got that Nolan N30 Flashback. Not a bad helmet at all. The shield flips up and the quick release strap is great. It comes with a removable neck liner that zips off. That part is fairly uncomfortable to me with it on but it's nice to have in the colder weather. The one I ordered was the black with the off-white strips in the style of that orange one, but they sent me the one with stripes like the one above. I think they are different year's models and many online stores haven't updated to show the current design. Here's a photo of me with the N30 on my fat head: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikepark/3815317506/in/set-72157621896168789/.

On the other hand, Nolan makes a full-face/modular/flip-up helmet with similar stripes called the N100E Flashback. You may want to check that out.

So here are some pictures of the helmet, along with a few other ones I have for comparison.  One is a Vetter full-face I've had a long time.  It was my first helmet.  The small one is the HCI Retro Puddin' Bowl.  The orange one, of course, is the Nolan N30 Flashback, and in one of the pictures I included that absolutely worthless skull cap I bought out of desperation one time - a real POS, hate it.  The pics are high res, so if you want a closer look, you can open them in a new window and zoom in.

And here's how it goes with my new jacket.  Not bad actually...

BurtonWarpup, I think the helmet looks better on you than me.  But I'll get used to it.  :)

I still haven't done a road test yet....

Edit:  Anyone curious about that jacket, you can read more here.

Aww, I really want a 3/4 just like the "Wine metal flake" Biltwell!

Pity they're not "biltwell" enough to be DOT-approved!   ::)

Ooooh, Fulmer has a V2 that is very similar!

Forgot to mention, the Nolan is made in Italy, if it matters to anyone...

That tears it, I'm gettin one.  Is that gnarly "Nolan" logo on the front a sticker?

The "Nolan" is on the front and back.  To be honest, I don't know what it is.  But whatever it is, it's the same thing as the stripes.  Not a sticker, but maybe a decal... it's slightly raised from the surface (along with the stripes).  The "DOT" on the back is clearly a sticker though - that's why I say the Nolan is not a sticker.

Before you get this one, you might check out the Suomy Jet Light.  Another really cool helmet.

The Nolan logo on the front and back of mine seems like it might be painted on top of the stripes. I hate them though I usually don't have to look at 'em. I'll probably slap some stickers over them soon. The stripes on mine are off-white and the logo is white. Totally clashes, really bad design. Seems like the designers did the stripes then the marketing dept slapped the same old logo on it.
