Spark Plug Wrench
« on: March 19, 2010, 11:58:25 AM »
I have done a number of searches and found out that many people have the same issues with their spark plugs. A normal spark plug wrench or 18mm socket will not fit.

Now these wrenches can be found on US sites for about $5, however, shipping is usually $20 or more. Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Lowes, Rona, and Parts Source are all dead ends for this item.

Has anyone been able to find these online or at their local store?

thanks

I wish I could remember where I bought mine, but it has been about 35 yrs. It is a deep and thin walled socket. I use it in conjunction with a U-joint for the inner plugs. The thin wall is the key, and deep enough as well of course.

Yes a deep well thin wall socket works fine. If not thin wall, nothing a benchgrinder can't fix, what I did to mine. Then put that on a universal joint with an extension and a speeder wrench and you're in business. Zip em right out. Have had it for nearly 40 years.

Going in, start by hand first before putting a tool on them to avoid crossthreading.

MC, I agree on how you start them. Otherwise it's too easy to start them cross threading.

I had the same problem.

I have three 750 engines.  I had to buy three sockets.  All three sockets will work on one engine.  Only one socket will work on the second engine.  And none of the sockets will work on the third engine.  (Only cylinder #2, by the way.)

My Dad had the tool kit for a Honda Shadow.  I found out that the spark plug wrench in that kit worked on the CB.

Go you your honda dealer with a spark plug (to make sure you get the right size wrench) and see if they have one for other Hondas.  You might find one for another bike, but also works for yours.

Good luck.  I know the frustration.

I got myself an 18mm plug socket from canadian tire which they had on the wall. Use a short extension on a 3/8 ratchet and have no problems getting plugs out of my 550. It fits just fine. Can't recall what it was worth, maybe $10-12??

thanks for all the feedback,

I have been to no fewer than 7 canadian tires, plus their website, and cannot find what is need. the 18mm spark plug tool (with the black handle) does not cut it. An 18mm deep socket does reach spark plugs 1 and 4, but not 2 or 3. I cannot locate a thin walled socket, and do not have a grinder to make my own...........

i have spent the better part of a month looking for this, and I feel like a complete tool, pardon the pun.

I will keep searching, and if I find something, I will post immediately.

thanks

Hey Josh,
Here is an OEM for $17 and $6 shipping
http://cgi.ebay.ca/HONDA-CB500-CB550-CB650-CB750-CB750F-SPARK-PLUG-WRENCH_W0QQitemZ350330611130QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item519154e5ba
Ask for USPS shipping and duty should be minimal.
Or let me know and you can drop by the shop and we can try and grind a socket for you.

2 tips..

First get about a 3 or 4 inch piece of gas line that fits SNUG on the white end of the plug.. put in on a screwdriver or rod if its not straight, then keep it in the tool tray to start your plugs without stripping..

2nd, if you wels a 1/4 socket into the end of a stock wrench, and yse a 1/4 in ratchet, you will NEVER regret it..or find anything better..

i contacted them, and they do not sell 18mm wrenches.

Found a Powerhouse dealer down on 25 Mobile Drive off of Eglinton. Brought it in next day, OEM, $14 taxes included!!!!

I found my new supplier. 4 previous dealers where non-responsive or unwilling to assist me.

There are wrenches that are just like the Honda wrench used for small motors. I have seen them in Home Depot and hardware stores.

I can vouch for this as well. I just picked up an 18mm plug socket at Canadian Tire in Waterloo this weekend. It even fits #2 and #3 plugs without issue. It doesn't appear to be listed on their website, but the store had a bunch of them.
