Removing Stock Handlebar Weights for Bar End mirrors
« on: May 23, 2010, 03:49:41 PM »
Tried to remove the stock handlebar plugs so I could try some bar end mirrors (expanding rubber mount type)
No luck.
Drilled and tapped them and tried the slide-hammer treatment with a long bolt.
Then tried gear puller treatment by tightening against a hollow tube matching the bar end diameter...still no luck.
Soaked well with PB Blaster first.
Anything else to try before I cut up the mirror attchment to bolt directly in the tapped holes?
I'm guessing they will buzz more with direct mounting?

Add some heat then try the slide hammer? But you'd probably have to remove the switch pods first...and if you have the wiring through the bars there's more work... might be easier to just use different bars.

Went ahead and modified the mirrors for bolt in to the plugs.
Not really any vibration issues.
They were just cheap ones anyway, just wanted to see if I would like them before spending more on high quality brand.

Very cool, please share with us the source of these mirrors, as well as what size hole you drilled and what thread you tapped the holes to.

They are "Ken Sean" brand el cheapos I found on clearance at local dealer...retail was $15.95 each.. I think I paid $20 for both if I remember right.
Just wanted to see if I liked them....so far so good.
Drilled and tapped 8mm hole, same size as expansion bolt for the rubber insert.
Had to shorten one bolt and saw off the end of the mount for the left grip.
The left plug was flush with the end of the bar, but the right one was inset about 1/2".
