CB350F - "Lil Sister" build.
« on: March 07, 2010, 05:41:08 PM »
Those who read my intro hear saw my CB350F that I traded my '81 GL1100 parts bike for after I was done with it. Today I was able to make a little progress, drained the old oil and filled with straight weight 30 and a 1/2 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to flush it out. With a little fresh gas, rolled her over a couple times with the kicker, I worked the throttle while I lubed the linkage and closed the choke, connected my 12v booster box to the battery terminals and gave her a kick. Fired right off, first kick!!!! ;D
Once she warmed up some, I started letting off the choke and after a short time she settled into a 1000rpm idle, kinda rough, but would idle all on her own with no choke. Working the throttle had to be slow to rev without a stumble at first but that improved quite a bit the more she ran. The tach is awefull sslow to respond, I verified each header pipe was getting hot and shut her down. Then Lubed the chain, cables, etc. I turned the key back on and checked all the lights, only things that didn't work was the high beam and the T/Signals light but don't flash.... no biggy!
I then took off the crash bar / highway pegs and the rear luggage rack. Front brake didn't release so I loosened the caliper... More work there to do I guess, huh but those things are to be expected. I also see the tag on the nech says 12/72 but the title says '74, VIN #'s match (whew!) so I'll have to run the numbers to see if it is a late 72, early 73 or doubtfully a 74.
Wound up firing her back up 3 times, and she ran better every time. I got out my meter and she is charging 14.6V.  Original owner thought the starter switch might be bad, yeah I had my doubts... but even the starter motor works when I jumper the solinoid.
Now when I pulled #1 and #3 plug wires there is not much change in idle even though all 4 pipes were hot. I checked the plug wires do go to two different coils. Pulled the plugs and they were damp, cleaned them with a brass brush and rechecked. Now she is smoothing out off idle but she is not consistant at idle, I can hear cylinders come in then drop out. Who knows if it will clear up on it's own or not the more she is ran in the garage.
So I still have more work ahead of me.... but she's officially a RUNNER!

nice looking bike you got there. is this your first time with a 350f they are very fun bikes. my problem with them is i look like a monkey romancing a football, when i ride one.(i'm to big for one).also don't go spend money on a honda flasher unit for your signals bussman 2 prong flasher works and it's only 2.00 dollars
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

Thanks for the input and yes, this is my first 350F, it is my first "running" Honda. I have an '81 GL but it has been a basket case rebuild that is nearring comletion every week. Years ago it was british bikes... it will be intersting to see me on it, 6' and wirey :D
I will always try to find parts that will interchange with OEM, oil filters for example can be had from Fram or NAPA brands

;) That is her best side. At one time she must have been laid down on the right.. home made mufflers, road rash on the seat, missing side cover, bent handlebars and the rear turn signal is broken. The stock exhaust you saw on the left side has rotted through at the muffler to exhaust pipe junctions.
I pulled the front caliper and cleaned up the crud that was in the pocket for the brake pads, cleaned and lubed the piston with a little brake fluid and they compress and release just fine now, flushed out the old fluid and that is another step in the right direction.
This is where she sits today I got my clubmans in the mail yesterday and will be posting a "for sale add" as soon as I decide what all I am not going to keep that maybe of use to others here...

Nothing earth-shaking to report but thought it was time for an update. I have been cleaning, lubing, adjusting and road testing sort jaunts on my country road. Absolutely LOVE this little bike!
Pulled the front forks and cleaned, used a body hammer, dolly, and a round rod in the vise to straighten out the Headlight ears / fork covers, then shot them with some silver paint...

Sanded the Points and reset the gap.
Reset timing.
Changed the Plugs to new NGK's straight from the Honda Dealer.
Drained the Oil that I had in it just to clean her up on the inside, it was straight 30W with 1/2 qt of Marvel Mystery Oil and now I've refilled with actual Castrol motorcycle 10W-40 oil.
She's running much better.

I need to finish it's aluminum seat I fabbed up and mount the catseye tailight once it gets here, then install the mini turn signals I piced up then she should be all legal to ride and get some miles on her this summer.

I wish! They are Cheng Shin Hi Max, they were on it when I brought the bike home, about a year old and virtually no miles, still had the little tits on them in the center.
I have made progress on the bike jumpping between it and my GL1100 bobber / cafe build. I got the seat pan welded, padded, covered, and installed... catseye turn signals are on and the tail light arrived, will probably mount it tonight, holes are alread in the seat pan, just cut the vinyl and tighten two bolts / plug in wireing.
