Fasteners-n-such
« on: May 25, 2010, 06:25:43 AM »
This seemed like the best place to put this.  I spent a few years as a purchasing manager for manufacturer, and fasteners was one of my commodities.  I also spent a fair amount of time working with and for racers and fabricators.  It may be geeky, but I really dig elegant engineering solutions to mechanically joining parts.  I looked around briefly on the forums and didn't see any of this info, but I apologize if I overlooked it.  Here are a couple of good sources for info and materials:
http://gltrs.grc.nasa.gov/reports/1990/RP-1228.pdf  what are you a rocket scientist?
http://www.carrollsmith.com/books/  not a lot of info on the site, but his books are great

It is a proven fact that modifying a SOHC Honda in any way will bring on the apocalypse.

 Another good resource..
Gardner Wescott Co. in Livonia Mich.

May have to be ordered in bulk and dealer ordered, but they have the goods.. chromed.. stainless..

Also in chromed allen heads, you have choice, plain finis, knurls ground off. and maybe tapered..Also chrome Allen Nuts!

Great products, if anyone wants to throw a few kits together

My favorite bathroom-reading book is Carroll Smith's Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Plumbing Handbook...really cool stuff in there.

And I still giggle every time I remember that his original title for the book was Screw to Win.  ;D ;D ;D

Categorie Z-spec fasteners come real close to the ones used on the fairing IMO

I would also try Fastenal. They are a distributor for Nord-lock & any Mil-Spec fastener. If they don't have in in the store they can get if from their local distribution hub on their own trucking system in 1-2 days with NO UPS charges!

There's also lots of good information on bolts, bolted joint design, and related issues at Bolt Science.

voxonda.com can supply Titanium bolts in different metric sizes. For whom loves that bit extra.

Cheers, Rob

The NASA link does not work.

I remember reading a paper on cut washers - the main point was that cut washers dont work.

If by cut washer you mean a helical spring washer (or "split" washer), that's right.  They do not stop a bolted joint from vibrating loose and, in some situations, can make it more prone to vibrating loose.  Reference here:  http://www.boltscience.com/pages/helicalspringwashers.htm.

Yes, that's what I mean - we call them seger washer for some reason - and I still use them.  Old habbits and such, but looks like the connection german way - guttendtight - than the spring washer.

The paper back than was from NASA, that's how I remembered.

I am looking at replacing the Engine Mount hardware (the 3 longer pins) with Chromed polished socket head hardware.  The 3 pins a faily big and long.  M10 - 280 mm and 315 mm and M12 - 345 mm. I don't know where to find them. Anybody found these somewhere.

Thanks.

You can order stainless metric allthread and just use stainless lock nuts. I just did this for mine and it works well. I ordered from McMaster Carr.
