Thrust washer behind clutch question- updated
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:21:15 AM »
I was installing my clutch on my 72 cb350f and when i glanced at the manual it said to make sure to install 25mm thrust washer, it goes on the shaft prior to sliding clutch basket on.

number 18 in the picture
I do not have one, and i know this is probably a stupid question, but is there anything special about this washer (brass, thickness, etc) can i use any washer that will fit or do i need to order one made for this purpose?

I did notice though, when I first slide the clutch on without a washer, it didn't look like after  installing one that the snap ring would  fit.

Thanks for the help

I saw where I could get a 25mm thrust washer from Graingers..any idea if this would work.

I have been searching different bike "stores" online and have not found one yet.

I think it's important. thrust washers permit movement one way but not in another, if I remember right. usually the one in the clutch can be reused if you bend it back into shape. can't you just find it at a place that sells OEM honda stuff?

There are plenty of online resources available to find Honda part numbers and availability.
One I always start with is: http://www.motogrid.com/pages/parts/viewbybrand/7/default.aspx
I usually do my online ordering through ServiceHonda.com. They discount between 20-30% which usually more than makes up for shipping costs if you're spending a few bucks. Be sure to look for availability though. That means Honda still makes the part.

The part number I found for you is SKU: 90455-333-010 WASHER, THRUST (25MM) (Honda Code 0291229)

It shows it is still available from Honda. keep in mind that in all likelihood you will not be able to walk into a Honda dealer and find the parts for our old bikes on their shelves. They all pull from Honda's warehouse when you order. Learn how to use the online resources, look up the part number, and take it to your local dealer and have them order that part number. DO NOT rely on a kid behind the counter to know these old bikes!
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I told my favorite service man "I think its a 4 cyclinder, but I'm not sure".  He said " not in stock, but I can order it, about $5.00 and a week or so"

So I think you could order one from someone else, or I'll get it and mail it to you from buffalo.

Is it a "4" or a twin?

Believe it or not just ordered it from from the local dealership..had to repeat  to guy i was dealing with ( who was just full of personality) what type of bike, year, model etc four times.
Then after we "found" the part he asked "and what bike is this for"!!!!!!!!!

This is why I quit dealing with them! but they did order the part :)

Well,
I started this in MAY 2010 and still no part. Everyone I order from says yes they can get it, take my money then have to refund it because they can not get it. And sometimes getting the refund is  a hassle.
I am getting discouraged with this build, and each day that passes, is a day the motor has no oil. I would love to put this back together.

Anyone here with a parts bike that may have one? PLEASE ANY HELP would be appreciated.

I don't think they'll have any "special cupped washers" like 754 says, but if he (or someone else) could elaborate more on their design and function, I'm sure we can figure out a suitable substitute.

Thanks buffaloejon,
I have searched everywhere for just a picture or dimensions of the washer. As 754 mentioned, I think it has to be a cupped washer and go on with cupped side out.

These where used on several different bikes from the cb350f to the 1983 SIlver Wing.

Yah, if someone could elaborate WHY it's a cupped washer, what function it serves, then maybe we could throw a substitute in there. I'm sure someone has a bike with this same washer in it taken apart, maybe they could give some dimensions.

edit: I don't even really know where to look for the stock washer, but this is what I do at work (find parts that could be substituted in old stuff), so I'd like to try and help if you're willing to try something else in there.

Yes, if there is something that can be used in place of it that would be great. Thanks for the help

I don't think that washer is cupped. I think that's just a plain flat washer.
I believe it's part number 17 that is the cupped washer.

Anyway the same part number is also used in these bikes.

This Honda 90466-MC7-000 WASHER A (25MM) is also used on these models and components:

Thanks for the other models that use this, it may help narrow down finding it. Sad thing is at the top of the page as always "This part is currently not available"

Yeah, hard to believe since the same part was apparently used in so many bikes in the 80's.

Well, I don't know for sure but I don't think there's anything special about that washer, I think it's just a plain flat washer.
Perhaps someone else here can confirm that.

I had thought it was a special washer. I did find the following picture, from a japenese site so unable to read, translation was not much better.

Also found a pic in the manuals on Honda4fun, but the picture is to blurry to see.

I know somebody somewhere has to have one the above mentioned bikes torn down to check it out:)

OK, I'm seeing a different message on this page.

http://www.powersportsplus.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-90466-MC7-000.html

Maybe it's just poor word choice on their part, but when I see "Product Obsolete", it leads me to believe that it's been replaced by another part, probably just a further revision of the design. The only question is, what part?

edit: did you try this site? It says nothing about being unavailable?
http://www.cycle-parts.com/Product.aspx?ProductID=1634619&SKU=90466-MC7-000

double edit:
This could be a chase that leads nowhere, but if you are patient and adamant, you may be able to find someone who could help you at Honda. Or they could at least point you SOMEwhere, other than a dealer I'm sure.

If it is a cupped washer, look for Belleville washer, or Belleville disc spring.

I took apart a 750 clutch today, and measured and took pictures of the washers, then when I went to post my findings, I realized you were talking about a 350. :-[

Hi Scotty.  My bike is a cb750 and I happen to need a washer like that.  Do you still have the pictures and measurements?  Trying to find a substitute as those replacement thrust washers from honda are no longer available.

Cheers,
Pierre

Find a bike wrecking yard, and pull one.  It is in fact a cupped washer.

I couldn't find the original pics, so I took some new ones. The "cupped" side of the washer faces inward.
