GPS Tracking via Cell Phone

For those of you who, like me, go riding down a lot of unknown roads I have found a program that makes it easier to see where you have been once you get back home. This is a GPS tracking application where you can upload where you have been to Google Earth and to share with others. The application is GPSed and can get a copy of it at http://gpsed.com/. For Java based phones the app is still a little buggy but it does work.

I keep a secondary GPS app with me or a map if I can't figure out where I am. No problems so far.

My wife and I recently upgraded our cell phones (previously basic cell phones only) to something a bit "smarter." In our case we went with Palm Pre +, very nice, compact and loaded with functionality. One of the features that sold us was its wireless capabilities. If you are out of your provider's coverage, you can connect through free hot spots if you can find one. Another is the ability, if you can't find a hot spot, is to turn the phone into a wireless router and connect your laptop to the I-Net through the provider's network. It also has a GPS function, but frankly it sucks. It places you anywhere from a half mile to a mile away from your true location. In doing some research, this does not seem to be a problem with this particular phone, but the use of aGPS used by many phones. Thankfully, its GPS is of little consequence to us as we use a Garman for travel.

Yeah, many phones use proximity to cell towers to guess where you are. This usually works better if you are traveling along a road. A lot of phones use real gps tracking. My blackberry is very accurate.
