What do you do when you break off a screw extractor?
« on: May 25, 2010, 11:03:10 AM »
In my case, it is making me look for a new(to me) caliper.  Cause what broke off is wedged in the hole.

Weld a rod to it?

Bend over and kiss your.......

Seriously, though, I've never once been successful in removing a broken one.  I've done it (snapped one off) a handful of times over the years.

Cry. Then replace the part. At least that seems to work best for me.

I tried to drill one out before, using a pretty good bit. I did more damage to the part and the drill bit than I did the extractor.

Then again, if you really want to try salvaging it (I'm assuming it's broken in the bleeder screw), you can try to put a little (don't go nuts) heat on the caliper around the screw, give it whack with a hammer adjacent to the threads and try walking it out. If there is anything to work with...

If You Have A Dremel.....

.... I have removed them with a small carbide grinder attachment in a Dremel
tool.  Grind away, obviously carefully with great finesse, until you can fit in another EZ Out
screw extractor.  Take care not to snap and break your small carbide grinder.

Before inserting and using the new EZ Out, use lots of liquid wrench, letting
it soak for 15 minutes, then warm it up with a butane torch, soak again,
warm it up again.

Finally, let it soak overnight with a good dose of liquid wrench.  Heat again....
Try your best to get all of the old extractor out.  They are very brittle and
not the best thing to bite onto with your new EZ Out.  Then, use your new EZ
Out.

Time consuming and tedious, but it can be done to save what you have
on your bike now.

If you are desperate take a concrete nail use a bench grinder sharpen it to almost a needle point and use a small ball pein and work it against the way you put it in use lots of penetrating oil and a bit of heat short sharp taps on the hammer pray to the old gods of mechanics (Vulcan Etc.) a good pair of needle nose helps, or replace the part as easy solution,

Ps there are specialized tools for removing e-z outs but I can't remember who made them. If I think of them I'll post them.

You can go to a good machinist supply and find a solid carbide drill.  Very carefully drill the f**ker out.  Don't try a masonry bit.  Solid carbide....  They are kind of shaped like an arrowhead if I remember correctly.  I had a bunch of them from my dad and gave hem away.  I figured that I wouldn't break any ez-outs after the last one taught me a lesson.  I was wrong.  I broke one off in a head last month.  DOH!

had some luck with MiG welding right on top of the screw extactor forming a section higher then the  opening the bolt is stuck in. then got an old closed ended wrench, one could use a nut as well, that was close to the opening size and welded that to the first weld. allowed me to easily turn the screw extactor back out clockwise then used a drill bit centered to ream the hole till one could pick the remaining old bolt out. the heat from welding does wonders as well
they also make left hand drillbits that help when cutting to spin the stuck bolt out.
go slow and steady and hope that helps.

Sorry guys, it wasn't a specific tool for removing ez outs it was for removing broken taps, that I used on an e-z out it worked, but I had to fiddle with it for a long time if I remember correctly it was years ago on an old english bike RE or Ariel something like that.

Would there be any merit to putting the part in the deep freeze for a while before adding heat?

I have had luck with the welding method mentioned above. It may take several tries.

I just bid on another caliper on Fleabay.  No access to welding stuff.

if anyone does need to chisel at a broken extractor or drill bit, wear glasses of some sort, saftey type if you have them, these are very hard metals and small chips can fly off at great speed, whos had something embedded in their eye?its #$%*house.
