HELP!!! Fitting a Motad Exhaust (MH55) to a CB550 F2
« on: January 23, 2006, 12:16:18 PM »
Damn this Motad exhaust! I thought it would be a doddle fitting it but it's proving to be quite the opposite.  From the amount of struggling that's been taking place, I can only assume that these frontpipes aren't routed in the same way that the standard pipes are.  There's no diagram to show a "different" layout, so I'm buggered!  :'(

Anyone got a photo of the frontpipes so I can see how they're routed to the silencer?  Until then, I shall put on a warm coat and and sit in the fridge where there is peace, quiet, darkness and Stella.

Hey Tom,

here's one on my 550K - think it's the same basic layout. Hope that helps.

Hi Ray,
Just been back in the garage to try the layout you sent. I didn't get too far cos' I couldn't get over the fact that when lined up in the position they should be in, pipes number 3 and 4 are different lengths. No.4 four pipe is a couple of inches longer than 3.  :-\

I looked closely at the markings on the pipes and they all (including the silencer) are marked as M5H instead of M55H which is what I ordered. I think the M5H is specifically for the K series (sigh).  I've written to the supplier and asked them to look into it.

Thanks for going to the trouble of taking those photos.

Update - I spoke to Dan at Motad and explained that when fitted, pipes 3 and 4 were different lengths at the end where they fit to the silencer. He very kindly said he would send out another complete set immediately. He guessed that the pipes hadn't been cut to the right lengths.

He also pointed out that the individual items were called M5H but as a complete kit they became M55H. Seems like an acceptable answer, but doesn't explain why their website quotes an F-model as M55H and a K-model as an M5H  :-\

Funny old thing.... My documents all refer to the "M5H"-kit for 550k/f and even 550. Hope you get the right stuff now.

When i used to fit these systems i seem to remember that the pipes were actually numbered at the silencer end 1, 2, 3, & 4 to help you get them in the right place. Like all good mechanics i only noticed this AFTER sruggling to get it right!! Also to the best of my memory the only difference in any of the 500/550 sets is the silencer mounting bracket as the rear footrest is in different places on different models

Now when fitting ALWAYS use new crush gaskets at the head end or i guarantee you it will leak!!

Replacement pipes arrived from Motad and they went on without a hitch. Bike refurb is now complete and she's looking gorgeous!  Thanks everyone, for your help.
