cl360 timing
« on: May 23, 2010, 01:54:37 PM »
hi there i am having trouble timing my cl360,

1) i turn the engine until both points are open to there max and i gap them .013"
2)then i attach my test light and turn the engine utill the L cylinder is on its compression stroke, the light comes on just past the LT mark so i turn the plate and get it so the light comes on at the LF mark BUT as soon as i tighten it down the lights goes out?! i am very confused, the plate doesnt seem to shift. so ill turn the motor all the way around till the L cylinder is on its compression stroke, and the light goes on but again just past the LT mark. what am i doing wrong?

Here's a link over to the HondaTwins forum, where the exact timing procedure is posted as a sticky.  It's the bees knees...

i should have mentioned that was the procedure i was using, not working, every time i tighten down the plate it goes back to turn on just after LT even if i compensate for it.

It's very common for them to move a bit when you tighten the screws.
All you can do is pre-compensate a little bit.....

pre compensated but just goes back to the LT mark,

Then compensate some more until you get it.....

Then go here and read how to do it - it's not like an SOHC Four or anything.....the right side point gap situation is counter-intuitive........

GOT IT! thanks alot, i changed my point gap to .014 and i was able to compensate to the mark easier. now onto my next issue. everytime i kick the kickstarter it feels like for 3 or 4 attempts it just rolls over, and then finally it will kick, so it ends up taking me like 30-40 kicks when its cold. the motor the in the cl360 is a cj360 motor cause i blew the other motor. has anybody ever heard of an issue like this?
