CB550 - question about assembling transmission
« on: May 16, 2010, 07:06:26 PM »
I'm putting my motor together and seem to have an issue with the transmission and how it engages the kickstarter shaft.  It appears that the top and bottom halves of the motor are going together correctly, along with the transmission shafts.  However, when I turn the transmission shafts with my hand, the counter shaft engages the kickstarter shaft and turns the gears, making a clicking sound.  I haven't figured out how to get it to "not" engage the kickstarter shaft.

Someone please enlighten me.  Take a look at the picture below.

Thanks, Mike

there's a spring between the two halves of the ratchet that is supposed to push them apart when the shaft is not being turned. either it's missing or not effective.

if you look at your picture, the half that mates with 1st gear should be up against the case and not in contact with the other half when the kickstart lever is not depressed.

Hi Paulages,

Thanks I will check it out.  I didn't remove the kickstart shaft when I disassembled the motor so I hope it just needs to be moved around a little.

Aloha, Mike

i just had a cb350G in the shop with this problem, only there is no sump pan on those engines and the only solution is to split the cases.

Wasn't the problem exactly this?

The spring was fine.  It's just that the kickstart return spring was not attached to that little tang on the shaft (clutch side of the motor).
