chat?
« on: February 03, 2006, 08:31:30 PM »
So, the chat feature of this forum appears to be permanently broken and I'm wondering if there is any interest in chat in general.  If there is, does anyone have any suggestions as to a site where we could set up a 'channel'?  I'm not really all that big on chat, so I'm not familiar with the landscape.

I've been experimenting with irc chat clients and servers since my linux systems are all configured with irc clients.  Not sure how convenient this is for Windows users, however.

Anyway, here is an example of an IRC channel for sohc4 chats that I set up tonight:

irc://irc1.us.open-ircnet.net:6667/#sohc4

This might be too quirky for most people to get the hang of.

I can't even get into it Glenn.

I have only been in the chat room once, had a right good laugh.

Several of us tried to use it last week but couldn't get in, so we drivelled on in the open forum for a few hours ;D

Broken? I've had no problems with it, except the fact that I'm chatting by myself  ;D

I think the main thing is that we tend to use the open forum (and sometimes the tech forum  :D) for chat purposes, so we don't really have the need for a dedicated chat room.  That's my $0.02

I agree. Could be I just don't know how to use it correctly, but tried once with only three of us in there and found responses were stepping over each other.

it's surely not broken but, it seems that most people on this forum don't have java?  how is that possible?  kinda like not having flash.

i do think it would be nice if it worked for all of us... cuz, wasting space on the forum when we just want to ramble in realtime doesn't make sense.

true, but often the urge to ramble begins in a thread ... "GET A ROOM!"    ;D

if one had one's garage on a wireless hub one could get a realtime "walkthrough" of a tricky maneuver...

I custom blend my java; 1lb Sumatra, 1lb French, 1/4lb Mocha Java. I really can't drink it after 5, though.

I was flattered to death to get an invite to a chat. Sam, I think you might have been in on that one. It reminded me of when we all got walkie-talkies in 5th grade- no one really had anything to say, but it seemed cool.  Untill everybody made excuses to go away because nobody really had anything to say.

Yes Ernie, that was the one time I went in the room, I think the idea to do it was down to if my memory serves me right Buffo, Kghost and Quail. I don't think the chat petered out for lack of topic, it was 6.30am and time for me to finish work and at your end, time for bed.
It was fun, but if having a chat room is causing problems for Glenn, I for one can live without it.

Being in the UK you guys are mostly asleep when I'm on line so I have not made much use of the chat room. When I did go in I was alone.
Heffay, remember fifth grade?? I barely remember when I went to work. ??? ::)

My wife and I met at my former employer. She still works there, I'm retired. She comes home, I ask how her day was, she mumbles the usual stuff about fools and silly decisions. I try to sound really interested.  ;) ;D

I've been messing with Google Talk (talk.google.com) since it ties in really well with the gmail account that I use for mailing lists and the like.  Anyway, since I'm on Linux, I can't use the native Google Talk client, so I set up GAIM which is a chat client popular on this platform.  In doing so, I noticed a 'Chat' button which connects to conference.jabber.org, so I created an sohc4 room there which is at sohc4@conference.jabber.org.

One nice feature is that jabber can be set to log all of the conversations in the chat room and you can go here to see the logs: http://www.jabber.org/muc-logs/sohc4@conference.jabber.org/

If you are interested, take a look at: http://www.jabber.org

Cool- Sam, if you want to chat, I'll give you my phone number. That way you can call and tell me you're on your computer and I can log in so we can chat on line.

Speaking of that magic moment, seems like I haven't noticed Quail lately...

It was either 4th or 5th grade I remember the Beatles came over.  My Mom wouldn't let me get Beatle boots because she strongly felt that growng feet needed laces. She did let me get the tight black pants with little zippers at the ankle.  Just what it takes to make a pudgy kid look like a stuffed sausage walking on tooth picks.  Mostly my memories are of the humiliations. It's all good- I'm pretty much immune to insults because I'v already done it to myself.  And I'm really good, too ~

It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when I know that you guys miss me.  Hey Eldar I had a dream the other night Dusterdude got ran over by a K8. LOL
These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

My chat button is missing????????  I liked it when I wasn't in there alone.  Had some good laughs.  We talked about all of you. Never did find out who the naked guy in the corner was.  It might not work for some of you because you never pick up after your selfs after using the room!

I wouldn't use the chat room.  I tend to lurk and read the posts...if on chat, I don't think I could lurk and read?? (am I correct on that?)

Anyway, I find reading all the old posts certainly helps me to understand info here.  So if chat was to be "dumped" every day...I'd miss out on a lot of really good info.

We could just set up a spot here on the site to use as "chat" that could then be wiped out on a monthly basis as we would just be BSing anyways. Would not be "realtime" but everyone could keep up on it and if by some chance someone here actually says something smart(who us?) it could then be moved into the faq or tech forum.

It was just a dream man, you know out of my control.  I was just surprised it had enough power to get over you hauling that big fat 25 lb chain it uses.  I have equipment with 2x the hp and 1/2 the chain.  Hey Wait just a minute i am putting down my own ride.  Well who cares, she out in the barn hibernating.

I realize after reading some of Heffays things around here that I don't think there were as many people in the room as you were seeing... it might be more fun to watch if you passed some of the good stuff around.
