I must have done something wrong...
« on: February 04, 2006, 09:07:44 AM »
I de-rusted the spare tank last night.  I used 'The Works', which does in fact work.  It was clean as a whistle last night.  This morning it has a full coat of surface rust back on it.  Maybe I didn't dry it good enough?  Should I have coated it with something right away - not implying KREEM, but a light coat of some sort of protectant until it's time to use it?

I'm going to have to re-do this, but need suggestions so I don't do the same thing twice.  Thanks.

Sounds to me like a case of flash rusting....bare metal needs to be coated...

My NOS tank has a coating of light oil inside and hasn’t rusted after 30 years smells like 3 in 1 oil.

I was thinking oil of some sort.  Any repercussions when it's time to use?  Need to clean it out before or just fill with gas?

Mr Honda put the oil in so no harm will come to the inside of the tank I'm just going to rinse it out with some petrol before I use it.

This is one reason why I prefer phosphoric acid to most other treatments - it doesn't flash rust near as readily.  I've used phosphoric acid based panel prep on sheet metal that has had no other treatment and has not developed surface rust in about 5 years of sitting in my garage and I don't live in a dry place.

As for having to clean out the oil before use, don't worry about it - a surface coating won't have any effect on your fuel.

I agree in terms of phosphoric based products, if available, try "The Must for Rust." Take a look at this earlier thread.

I JUST tossed out the bottles for the Works.  What's in it?  Phosphoric or Hydrochloric acid?

Nope.  Garbage Truck came yesterday.  Thanks for the thread, I had read that one, but it didn't really go into much detail about any after-cleaning coating.  However, after reading again, I does say the Works is HCl.

How long are you planning to store it after cleaning before using it? Use phosphoric based and if not long, just rinse thoroughly and dry. If it might be months, I would go ahead and use a thin coat of oil.

Nothing I do is fast.  I'm going to re-clean (I'll try the Ph. stuff) and oil for good measure.

After I derustified my tank, I coated it with 2 stroke motoroil, the kind you mix with the gas. It's formulated to burn, and since I have a chainsaw I have plenty on hand. You can buy 2 or 4 oz bottles at HD or Wal-Mart (8oz there). Works great.

I wound up with Phosporic Plus from HD.  Cleaned everything up real nice, and ended up with a light coat of oil.  Now I just have to figure out what to do with the outside of the tank.

One word of caution though.  Don't do like me and use the petcock as a 'stopper'.  I no longer have any metal between the regular & reserve ports - all eaten away.  Bummer.

How long did you leave the Phos. in there?

The first time around I used the HCl for a couple of hours.  I noticed deterioration, but thought that's how I got it.  The second time with the Ph, another couple of hours and 'poof'. I'll post a pic later.

It didn't take long at all.

As promised...

It still works, but there's no difference between normal & reserve; which may lead to some nasty surprises.  Oh well, maybe I'll use it for a 'tune-up tank' stopper.

On to the next tank (my 175).  Not wanting to trash this one, I want to take the petcock off first.  It's one of those 'screw' type.  How the heck do I get this thing off?

Remove the "bowl" and the screen behind it,  You should then see a screw or two to remove the petcock body from the tank.
