Partial choke seems to make things run better
« on: March 20, 2014, 03:19:33 PM »
Bike runs great but notice it seems to like a tad choke.... Just a smoother throttle response...by partial choke I mean just a tiny crack of it.... What action could I take to ride without partially choking and yet still possibly retain smoothest throttle input? Ty in advance

Clean your carbs and make sure to clean the emulsion tubes.

BTW, are you running the stock air box and exhaust?

Richen it up a tad. Check for air leaks too.

If you need reduce the air going into the carbs to get smooth running, you have a lean condition. It can be dirty jets, an air leak or a combination of both.

The answer is in your question, just think about it. A choke reduces airflow so if I reduce airflow my air/fuel ratio "seems" to be richer now.

If richer makes me faster, then I was running lean. I'm not d!cking you around just think about it.

Next step is to isolate where the bike runs better, at what throttle position. I have seen you post other stuff identifying things like this with the carbs so go for it

I know that it means I need to run a tad richer... That's sorta common sense... But there's a lot of ways to richen it... Just wondering what's the best way

There is no best way. You need to find out what is making it lean, first.

Dirty jets? Air leak? etc. etc. etc...

Fixing the problem as mentioned before would be your best bet. Check for vac leaks. With the bike running, spray some WD40 or starting fluid around the carb boots and manifolds especially where they meet another surface. if the idle changes you have a bad seal somewhere. If that's not it then take the carbs off and go through them with a fine tooth comb, so to speak. And you didn't answer the question on what kind of air intake do you have? OEM, PODs, etc?

I told you what to do

Find out where response is better, according to the throttle grip position.

If it is better at idle, play with idle screw 1/4 turn to richen a tad. If further out up to roughly 1/4 then maybe pilot.

If felt across a wider range from almost 1/4 on up thru half it is the needle. Try shimming for a baby step or go one full notch richer.

This is all assuming that everything else has been sorted. If you change the needles your sync that you nailed a couple weeks ago will be lost
