CB500/CB550 wiring problems
« on: April 25, 2010, 09:27:52 AM »
Hope someone more expert than me can help. I have a CB500/4 1975, and needed to replace the RH switch. Got one from a spares place, and the wiring colours are different - still 7 leads, as follows, some of which I can't identify:-

Red/Yellow - start button
Black/white - kill switch
Red/Blue (or is it Black?)
Black
Black
Black
Blue/brown

I'm at a loss to know ho to line these up with the originals! I suspect my new switch is from a CB550, or CB400 - have checked the wiring diagrams online and still can't find where these belong - how do I differentiate between 3 black leads, and what is that red/black or blue lead?

Help! Much appreciated.

I don't have a dead answer for you, but use process of elimination. Connect what you know then concentrate on what's left- to get the ball rolling.

What are the controls on the RH control? Stop/Run/Stop and starter button or do you have turn signals, high/low beam options?
Its hard to be wrong when you know nothing!

Not possible to have a 1975 CB500/4 as they were discontinued in '73, though the right hand switch was carried over to the 550s unchanged 'til the '76 models...  it sounds like your switch is for the post-'76 bikes. Does it have an on/off switch for the lights, as well as the engine kill and starter switch? If not, you have the later switch, and you would have to modify the wiring on the bike to make it work.

I had to replace my left hand controls because of a cracked clutch adjustment pivot, I didnt want to mess with the wiring so I took the buttons out of the old shell and out of the new shell, and mounted the old buttons into the new shell. Don't know why you're replacing the controls, but even if one of your buttons doesnt work, I would just unsolder the wires from the broken buttons, and solder them back to the new one, then just put the new shell on over it. Just an idea.

Thanks for the help guys, sorted now. I took the entire contents of the old switch (which had its kill switch removed and the wires joined), and fitted it all into a shell from a 550 switch. AND IT ALL WORKS  :)!
