Damaged Rear Hub
« on: May 28, 2010, 11:05:32 PM »
Hey guys, I've got a problem.

I'm redoing the wheels on the K5 750 that I got last fall, and had just finished cutting off all the rusty old spokes on the rear hub I noticed something odd. Some of the spokes had worn grooves into the sides of the hub. And not just minor grooves in the clear coat but fairly deep ones directly into the metal. Looking closer at the hub, I started to notice a good number of the spoke holes were worn as well. They were out of round to the point of beginning to look like a figure 8 in some locations. This was confusing to me because the front hub was in great shape, and none of the holes were worn.

What I want to know is...

-Is this a common occurrence with rear hubs? If not what caused it?(Over tightening of the spokes?)

-Replace or Reuse? I'm fairly sure I need to replace the hub, but its not covered in the shop manual that I have so I figured I'd ask the experts here.

Replace it mate, spokes marking the hub is normal, but the damage you're describing sounds like it's done a lot of miles on loose spokes, and they've been allowed to grind into the alloy hub. The cheapest, safest and easiest fix is just to replace it. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
