Rear Wheel Bearing Kits
« on: October 23, 2011, 11:28:26 AM »
This might be a stupid question, but what's the difference between the All Balls and Pyramid Parts rear wheel bearing kits?

The bike in question is my 750-K5.  As far as I can tell, the Pyramid kit has just the two bearings, and the All Balls kit comes with new seals.  Does it also come with three bearings?  (Do I need 3 bearings, or am I just seriously misinterpreting the fiche page?)

Thanks again for your help, oh knowledgeable masters of SOHC4 lore.

The wheel has two bearings, the sprocket carrier has one. There are no seals that I know of.
Check with a local bearing supplier - the rear wheel bearings are 6304 , the carrier bearing is a 6305 (check these first, I may be wrong). If you get sealed bearings (-2RS) you won't have any worries about lubrication. Standard electric motor grade bearings (what shops stock) are just fine, higher spec stuff will be special order and more expensive. You will probably get a high quality brand (SKF, FAG, NTN, etc.) rather than cheap junk. All Balls has supplied good stuff but others are dubious in my experience.
The price at a bearing shop is always cheaper than the "bike" suppliers when I've checked. Plus these are very very common bearings and will be in stock 99% of the time. And you get them immediately, with no surprise shipping charges etc.

Seals is probably the wrong term.  I think they are just rubber dust cover.

Thanks for the info though!  I may try to source these locally or find the sprocket carrier bearing online somewhere.

There is a seal in the bearing retainer on the sprocket carrier . It measures 34x55x9 (mm) . There is also a o ring 68x2.6 (mm) that goes between the carrier and the hub . These parts are in my k1 . Probably same for yours .
