CB750f - need sprocket advice
« on: May 28, 2010, 06:07:31 PM »
I'm a bit new to motorcycles and I would like some advice.  Here's my story.

In December I bought a 1975 Honda CB750f that runs fine.  It has a 48 tooth rear sprocket that I'm guessing is made of black nylon or a similar synthetic material.  The teeth on the sprocket have pretty much all broken off and I'd, of course, like to replace the sprocket.  The old sprocket seems pretty terrible to me considering the broken teeth.  I don't know how big the front sprocket is so I'm not sure what the current ratio is.

I have heard it recommended that sprockets and chains be replaced at the same time.  I'd like to know what some of your suggestions are for a new rider like myself.  Would you suggest replacing front and rear sprockets and chain?  Just the rear?  Ratio suggestions?  Thank you for your help!

I have a cb750f2 ('77) and is has a 43 tooth sprocket. Isht is definitely not made of any synthetic material though.  Somebody might be able to help, especially if you post some pics.

Words do not explain thoughts very well . . . but a picture might help!

Go here! Get the JT sprockets front and rear. You might save money getting the chain locally. Under FAQ there is a list of good vendors. your probably 17 0r 18 front and 48 rear!

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

The stock size for the 75/6 F is 17t and 48t. Seeing that the rear is so worn it would be a good idea to check the condition of the drive sprocket.

The 77 is 14t and 43t but I believe they also use a different chain.

You could also go with the K ratio which is 18t and 48t which would make it run a little lower rpm at highway speeds with a bit less vibration.

If you can find the budget, replacing the set is the only way to go you'll ruin a new chain with just one old sprocket >:( as for ratio, what do you want the bike to do? Less teeth on the counter,or more teeth on drive=quick out of "hole" but less topend speed and vice/versa up to a point!Too "tall " and you can't pull in high gear.

Do you guys know details about replacing the front sprocket on a '75 CB750f?  How involved is that process?  Thanks so much for the input!

If the front is anything like a 78cb750k which it should be, remove the sprocket cover plate and theres a 10mm maybe 12mm bolt and washer the holds the sprocket in place, so basically remove the chain take off the bolt and washer and just pull the sprocket off, put new sprocket on, put the bolt and washer back on, add the chain, replace the covers and tension the chain done. That's the basics of it I may have forgoten something or they maybe a trick to the sprocket but otherwise its that easy.
