I think the solenoid is gone
« on: May 29, 2010, 11:40:14 AM »
I've got a 70s Honda C70 and I think I nuked the starter solenoid. Is there anything I could put in it's place? This thing is a 6V system, but can you use something else?

I was checking to see if the 71 SL70 engine I have has a starter but no.  If you need any other engine parts that are compatible let me know.  I have no use for this engine and may just dismantle it.

Is that the same engine that's in the c70? If your plan is to scrap it there may be some pieces that would be useful.

It looks like the same engine thought the carb looks different between these two models.

I would go to a lawn equipment repair shop. Lots of older riding lawnmowers and yard tractors used 6V batteries and their solenoids should be fairly small. You could use one for an old car but that's going to be rather large.
I think you should be able to get replacement parts for these things. I recently repaired an ancient riding mower and we got engine parts with no trouble.

I actually got a 6V battery from batteries plus or some such store. It's a low cold cranking amp battery, so I don't intend to put a starter back on it. It kicks over so easily with the new battery that there isn't any need.
