Replacing stock gauges?
« on: May 30, 2010, 05:00:49 AM »
I am looking to replace my beat up stock gauges with a set from a vtr250. Will these work as long as I can figure out how to match up the wires?

Those are very nice looking gauges!  I don't know but I have a hunch they will work, since Hondas seem to share gauge ratios.  I looked this up for my CB350 project, which I may get aftermarket gauges for, and it looked like the ratios were pretty standard across the range.  I don't know where you'll get a temp reading from, though!

From an oil temp sensor on his engine! They are pretty generic, and should work with the gauge. Not sure about the scale being for water and not oil though...

Will the wiring match up or will the color coding be completely different?

the wiring for the lights?? Don't worry if it's just lights, getting them backwards wont hurt anything. Doesn't matter which way it goes through a light. Having said that any green wire is generally the ground. What color are the new wires?

The wiring for the temp is another matter, if polarity is backwards it probably won't work: i doubt any damage will be done. That's if you use the temp for oil. Just use a flashlight battery to determine which are the light wires on the gauges.
