Can a F Clutch fit inside a early K motor?
« on: May 31, 2010, 05:05:17 PM »
I Have a spare F bottom end that has a new clutch in it, Can I take that Clutch and put it in my K motor.  I don't know what model K the motor is, because it is unstamped.  I was told unstamped meant it was an early model factory replacement motor. Any Ideas?

swapping the entire clutch should work just fine. Yes, several bikes that had broken cases were replaced with no stamps on the ID plate. Count the number of screws holding the clutch cover housing...........10 is standard but 11 means a K0

Look at the inside of the aluminum engine clutch covers from the two different motors. Not the tin outer cover, but the aluminum case covers. Look carefully at these aluminum case covers on the inside of the cover, specifically where the bosses are for the screws that hold the outer (tin) cover in place. I used an early aluminum case cover on a later model (since the early part was chrome) and one of the screw bosses protrudes a little further into the clutch basket cavity than the rest (about a 1/4") on some of the early aluminum case covers. This is not a problem with the early clutches but the later clutch have a little taller stack and this extended screw pocket can interfere with the clutch hub. After I bolted mine together the clutch hub was "pinned" in place and would not budge. A dremel quickly removed the extra 1/4" of material and all was well. I'll post some picts this evening if necessary.

There are 4 years of the F assuming you're talking about the 750's. Can you be a little specific?!

My F has the early K clutch. My K spare engine has the larger clutch basket I will use in my F.

See what I mean??

The motor I have, the K motor, was a near complete spare.  It is missing things like a clutch and points cover, but I have other spare covers from the spare F2 bottom end I have that has a broken stud in the case.  So I was planning on using the F2 clutch cover on the K motor. Thats my plan anyway, I'll let you know if it fits on OK.  Thanks for the heads up.

I have a F2 bottom end with a broken stud in the case.  The previous owner installed brand new clutch plates.  I found out the F plates do not fit in a K basket.  So I took the F basket and assembly and put it in the K motor. It seems to fit OK, everything went in.  One thing that worries me was the assembly of washers and what not.  If you look at the assembly diagrams the two baskets are different and some of the washers are different.  But so far everything looks good.
And if I understand what you are saying is there are two different sized clutch baskets? If you look at the parts diagram on bike bandit for the F2 motor, my clutch basket and assembly is the same as the one in the pictures.  And yes 750 is what I am discussing.  Thanks for the info

I'm on the road working until sat PM. I took pictures of both baskets as well as measurements of each this past week. I haven't uploaded to Photobucket yet. I do have my camera and laptop with me. I will check to see if I have the SD card and upload them tonight then post. I plan on installing the newer basket which came from my spare K8 engine into my new F0 750/900 engine. The guys say you need the matching clutch cover also or need to take your Dremel and cut something on the old cover. Don't know, haven't looked into that yet but there isn a recent topic/post about that. The longer basket was a fix for rattling clutches. It has a "double" metal plate from the GL models in the middle that is thicker. Most everything else is the same except perhaps the clutch springs. be careful there because using the longer springs will/may cause the clutch lifter plate to break when tightened down.

Gotta run for now.

Jerry

I've got a late F2 clutch on a K2 motor. It works fine, but you have to switch out the entire clutch assembly AND you have to use the F clutch cover. The F2 clutch assembly is taller and won't fit under the early K side cover.
