ford 200ci six, blowing oil like crazy
« on: June 06, 2010, 01:20:27 PM »
My dad drives an old '82 Mercury Cougar wagon, it has a 200ci straight six motor.

He had a sporadic miss and I told him "some Lucas fuel system treatment might clear it up."

So he poured a bottle into about a 1/4 tank 'o' gas, drove it a few miles to the gas station, and filled the tank up.
The next day, he drove up to my house (100+ miles) and said there was a little puff of smoke when he started off from traffic lights.
He got here fine and we hung out, changed the oil, fixed a bad leak on the speedometer cable, added some fluid to the transmission, and did basic tune-up things to the vehicle.

THE NEXT DAY

Started the car and backed out of the driveway, put it in drive, hit the gas, and WOOOOOSH!  oil blowing out the exhaust like crazy!
...Pulled it back in and pondered for a while why adding a fuel system treatment to an engine would do such a thing to a car....

I pulled the plugs and the back 4 plugs looked beautiful, but the front two were just dripping with oil.
There was also fresh unburned oil dripping out the tail pipe.
   needless to say
This had us stumped until my dad called his brother who informed him of an old ford 300 six he had that did that same thing.
He said he did an engine flush and it quit blowing oil.

we thought it was worth a try.

video to come shortly.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

so, is it a stuck oil ring in the front two cylinders or what?

never figured it out.
The thing ran fine, we "cleaned the fuel system" the next day it burned oil like nuts.
I guess the fuel system cleaner did something to the oil rings over night.
the car was a ''one owner'' driven by an old lady, then my wife drove it for about 3 months, then my dad (who doesn't go past 1/4 throttle)

the exact same thing happened to my uncles truck and one of my friends at race cars of yesterday as well, but they didn't do anything different for it to happen.

it's fixed now.
the video is still processing.  ::)

Maybe he put the fuel treatment in the oil tank. He probably wouldn't admit it.

Early '80s 200 six had a nasty habit of breaking pistons right at the ring grooves.

weird... it's fixed now.

I forgot one important thing-
when we went to flush the engine I took off the new filter to run the old one (didn't want to waste a good filter) and it was empty.
even though we ran the engine for about 10 minutes with the new filter installed, no oil went into it.

AH HA!!!

well, my dad got home and it started smoking again.
AND! it wouldn't move out of it's space.   the oil was a quart over too.

Come to find out, the vacuum modulator on the transmission goes bad-
it sucks transmission fluid into the the big vacuum line on the manifold just above cylinder 1 and 2...

If you haven't learned anything from this thread, remember this-
nothing explains anything on these old fords.

I swear it was oil coming out of the tail pipe and on the spark plugs...
I know the difference between red tranny fluid and golden delicious oil.
we'll see what occurs.after the replacement.

here's a guy that had the same problem.

I thought it would be a good idea to post it, cause I'm sure it's happened to someone else and I couldn't find much about it.

this way if someone google searches, maybe my thread will come up.
