Flasher relay
« on: June 01, 2010, 02:52:49 PM »
I need some advice in order to determine the problem with my right turning light. When the bike is in idle, I switch the left turning signal and works fine, but when I switch the right turning signal ,stays on , no blinking. The problem dissapear as soon as I rev the bike. I´m thinking the flasher relay is not working properly, but maybe any of you electrical guys have another opinion.

The old mechanical flashers rely on voltage to
flash, so that is normal.
When the they slow down it is usually time for a new flasher.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

There is prolly a corroded connector in your right turn signal wiring.  Corroded connections are resistive, resistance means a drop in voltage.  Drop too much and your idling engine isn't producing enough voltage to cause the mechanical flasher unit to work properly.

Two things you can do.  First and highly recommended is clean all your connectors.  Repack them with dielectric grease to slow the recurrence of corrosion.

Second option, also highly recommended is to replace your mechanical flasher unit with a modern electronic 3-prong setup.  You will find a green wire hanging loose by your current flasher.  Connect green to ground terminal, black to + terminal and gray to the third.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Much less than full charge and you will see this. Charge the battery and report back.

The new flasher relays are between 6-15$ at autozone.  If its original its probably tired.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!
