Looks like I scored a '78 GS750 for free!!
« on: June 18, 2010, 09:25:02 AM »
Was talking to a friend that I don't see very often the other night, and we started talking about motorcycles.  Turns out he's had the GS sitting in his shed for about the last ten years.  I told him that he should gift it to me instead of just letting it rot away, to my amazement, he says yes.  Only condition on it is that if I get it running, I have to let him ride it once in a while.  DEAL!

I haven't seen it yet so I have no idea what kind of condition it's in.  He said it was running when he put it away, but he didn't do anything to store it properly.  I'm guessing it's going to be a major project.

Anyway, free motorcycle, who cares what shape it's in.  Funny thing is, I was just reading the feature piece on the GS in the current issue of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics the night before.

Any of you guys know this bike?  I went over to the GS forum and creeped around, it wasn't as lively as this one at all.  Pretty dead actually.

Thanks for listening, Lenny.

Dead??  Wow, the GS Forum is every bit as lively as here.  http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/index.php

Great machines, though.  One or two weak areas, but fixes are available.

And, heresy of heresy - I'd rather have a '78 GS than a '78 CB.  And I've owned both at one time or another.

Post some pictures of it when you get the chance.

I shouldn't have said dead, to be fair, I was there at around 1 am ;D.

I will definitely post pictures!

I owned a GS750 for a couple of years.

Peaky 2-stroke-like power delivery when you wanted it, but would potter along when you wanted.

Easily topped 120mph two-up.

Handling was 1st class for its time (and probably still is) - was called the Japanese Ducati. I set up air forks as well. Everything the magazines said was true.  After a while I began to out-ride the single front disc and the flexible spoked wheels. Had to sell before I could make improvements. :-(

Quiet, very comfortable and sm-o-o-th. The type of machine tha when on the highway you'd think "I'd like to way up there ahead - and woooosh - like on a magic carpet you were there."  ;D

Hope it all goes well for you..

A couple of typos in last post.

IMHO the GS750 was the next major milestone after the CB750 in total package bikes. (Forget the Z900). (Quickly dons asbestos suit  :D)
